Happy Birthday, George!

Dare we hope that Old Man Winter threw his last hissy fit of the year on Monday night and Tuesday morning? Once we get over the cold snap that followed that slippery snow storm we're promised mostly pretty fine weather through the end of February, and then it's March.

Forecasters are calling for sunny skies and above freezing daytime highs right through Wednesday, Feb. 26, when there may be some snow showers, but still relatively mild 20 and 30-degree temperatures, except at night. There are no m...

The Big Bad Wolf Ain't So Bad

I was interested in an article I read recently in Fordor's travel online about the relative safety risks of various mammals, insects and reptiles you might encounter in North America.

According to their data, there are two documented human fatalities caused by wolves since recordkeeping started. I often hear people say they don't want wolves in our state because they are dangerous to humans; the data does not support that. So I was not surprised that their much smaller canine cousins the...

What happens to the other $2.5 million, surely the building does not need that much more repairs.

Why have a budget meeting then come back a few monthly later and ask for $500,000 a year for 5 years.

So you know if this does not pa...

Thanks, School Bus Drivers!

If predictions are right, TIMESland shouldn't be getting any more significant snow for the next week or two, except for perhaps an inch from late Wednesday into early Thursday morning. Relatively mild temperatures are also predicted once the cold snap on Thursday and Friday is gone. The only sub-zero predictions are for the nights of Thursday, Feb. 13 and Friday, Feb. 14. Good cuddling by the fireplace weather for Valentine's Day. After that, we're to be treated again to daytime highs in the high ...

Dear Editor:

Aquila Treated Differently Than Local Citizens

A few years ago, my wife and I built a home on the Menominee River.  During construction it rained and a few hundred gallons of water accumulated in the basement.  The builder applied to the DEQ for a permit to drain across the property to the river.  It was denied.  When our well was dug, we found out we had an Artesian well and were told we could not drain the excess water into the river.  We thought how great the State of Michigan's DEQ is taking such good c...
