Letter to Editor:

Dealing with the Stephenson Town Board at times reminds me of the Keystone Cops or George Bush’s encounter while ducking shoes over in Iraq. Let me explain....

During the April 2010 Town Board meeting I waited to the end of the regular meeting to introduce myself as a 20-year resident. I asked the Town Board Chairman, who chaired the Roads Committee, if any decision was made that they opened up the so-called dead-end roads of Nelson and Island for a one-year trial period as access ATV roads. I wanted to inform the board that there were residents and non-residents whom I was representing that were unhappy with this decision to allow access.

There was no input from any of the other board members present but I was told by the chairman that I could request a discussion of the matter at the next board meeting. I did make that request; however, before leaving that meeting, the chairman called me over and pointed out that in their recorded minutes the resolution for access was denied. I reminded him that the signs were still posted; he said he would look into the matter. Two days later the signs were removed.

The May meeting’s agenda did not include the discussion about the roads or the discussion I’d requested. I assumed it was a dead issue so I did not attend.

On May 31, 2010, almost two months after the April agreement to initially remove the signs, the signs reappeared, but they were different. The posted signs said “ATV Route only.” Two days prior to this posting, nothing was mentioned at our T.I.E. Lakes meeting by the president of the organization. I later learned that the presenter of this petition to approve the ATV route was also a former town board member. This also raised some concerns.

I attended the June 2 Town Board meeting and we waited again until the end to speak to the chairman. I asked why he did not place a courtesy call to me in April, sharing the discussions and new decision to open the roads up to ATV traffic. He showed me the minutes and another statement that a petition had been presented to open the roads again. He said he had acted in error by taking the signs down. Where and when did a discussion take place? What was this petition and why wasn’t it presented at the meeting in view of everyone concerned?

On the 21st of June, an additional sign was posted below the original one: “Local traffic only. No access to the trail.”

As a town board chairman, he is representing our community. I now see a representative that doesn’t remember issues/concerns and lacks in communication skills with his community. I am unsettled and greatly concerned about our board and how our issues are handled.

I am concerned that there will be many more requests for access throughout our town that will infringe on the privacy of both residents and non-residents.

Sincerely,

Jerry H. Warczak,

Resident of Eagle Lake,

Crivitz

This past weekend the Peshtigo Parks & Recreation sponsored “Christmas in July.” The Department would like to congratulate Tom and Paula Jornlin for taking first place for the best decorated campsite. We also would like to thank all the campers who participated in decorating their campsites and making our first annual “Christmas in July” a huge success, and we hope to see you next year.

We’d like to give a special thank you to Linda Nagowski and Peggy Gardon for taking the time to decorate at the park, Mike and Carolyn Harper for the wonderful sleigh rides while listening to Christmas music and Santa Claus for the delicious candy canes.

Another special thank you to all the carolers (dressed for the occasion), Pastor Jean Waldron, Kay Waddinham, Tami Tipler and nephews Jaron, Jenson and Jayden Schwittay, and Teri Jandt for singing Christmas songs for all the campers to enjoy.

We’d also like to thank the businesses who donated prizes for the best decorated campsites: Peshtigo Chamber of Commerce, Badger Credit Union, Lee’s Family Foods, Luigi’s and the Peshtigo Pharmacy. The Peshtigo Pharmacy made Christmas come early as they donated bags filled with toys and games for the children camping. The public enjoyed delicious Christmas cookies donated by Lee’s Family Foods and Anita Morois.

I would personally like to thank Parks & Rec Director Dave Marquardt and his staff for an awesome job decorating and a job well done. Thank you again to everyone involved!

Parks & Rec Committee,

Cathi Malke

Dear Editor:

The 2010 Annual Appeal of The Society of St. Vincent de Paul, Marinette, finds our community mired in the aftermath of the global economic recession. While there are indicators of a recovery slowly beginning, many presently find themselves and their families in financial turmoil, some in desperate need. Our local unemployment rate is approximately 12% and foreclosures have increased 472% since 2000, that is, from 55 to 260.

As Vincentians we strive to see the face of the suffering Christ in our needy, our less fortunate-those whom we serve. We invite you to look upon our current situation as an opportunity to exercise gospel-based stewardship and share with those in our community that are less fortunate. Reflect on how you might help: time, talent or treasure. You have been blessed! How might you best share those blessings?

In June our conference distributed $10,093.67 to 68 families. Most were vendor payments for utilities (WPS and water/sewer) to 41 families, receiving $6,510. This is the time of year when many low income families face the shut off of utility services.

Currently, this is a reality for many families due to lay-offs, termination or reduced hours of employment.

With this huge expenditure, our meager treasury is severely depleted. We beg that anyone out there who can help, do so, that we might continue to assist our less fortunate families in keeping their power and water on.

We are certified as a charitable organization and 501 (c) (3) approved. As such, all donations are tax deductible. Donations can be sent to The Society of St. Vincent de Paul, P.O. Box 562, Marinette, WI 54143-0563. We need and appreciate your generosity.

In the spirit of St. Vincent de Paul,

William Johnson, President,

Society of St. Vincent de Paul

St. Joseph’s Conference

Holy Family Parish

I wish to thank the people of Coleman for a wonderful parade. However, my day didn’t go too well. While turning into a parking lot with my direction light on a vehicle rear-ended my car. I was watching the parking lot and did not see the vehicle that hit me. The driver did not have the courtesy to stop and see the damage that was done.

How could you be so inconsiderate! What would you do if this happened to you? Come forth, inconsiderate driver. I would at least like to know who you are.

James Lund,

Letter to Editor:

Letters to our elected officials are numerous. For me to actually write and send one is rare.

That being said, I must say that I cannot believe the Federal Government, which always claims that “it” should not be involved in State issues, is going to interfere with the decision of Arizona to act on illegal border violations that have caused this and other states of our union so much in finance, crime, lack of control and frustration of its people.

Where does it stop and where are the rights of all the people who have suffered at the lack of enforcement of laws already on the books, both at State and Federal levels? These “United States” are individually the makers of their state laws and statutes thus should have a total right to enforce and abide by the rules that they have put in place.

When will rights return to the people on a local level? I am beginning to feel like all of us who constantly pay for all wrongs, all causes and all needs of the populace are penalized through our pockets and our graces. We have been backed into countless corners, we are frustrated, and although normally passive and abiding, we are reaching a breaking point.

I implore you as an elected official to not only hear us but to take our message, shouting to the Federal level. Arizona has a federal lawsuit filed against the state. The lawsuit is based on this Presidential statement: “Throw out the existing law on constitutionality.” Are we really going to pay for that? Let the states have their powers that they have worked for. Keep Federal laws at a level that they should be. There are certainly enough problems at the national level that need attention. Or perhaps, we the states can intervene and get all of us out of a few hopeless situations that are already draining the dying mid class society that made this country strong.

Sincerely,

Janis A. Schnabl,

Wausaukee

To the Editor:

On July 10, Goldilocks would have found the day of the 2010 Garden Walk was just right; blue skies with plenty of neighborly smiles and a variety of awesome gardens.

Thank you to our host gardens, the garden guests, the volunteers, and our community for making our walk such a success!

The garden owners shared their knowledge and pride of their seasonal labors with over 200 visitors. Professional organizations such as the Northern Lights Master Gardeners, UW Extension, Respite Care sponsored the event with the proceeds benefiting Menominee Animal Shelter, Respite Care and United Way.

Thank you also to the participating restaurants who offered a discount to our garden guests and the businesses that supported the event. They were Hometown, Perkins, Schloegel’s, Tastebuds, George Webb, Angeli’s, Marinette Farm & Garden, Chamber of Commerce, Stephenson National Bank and Valucare.

We have begun planning the 2011 Garden Walk. If you would like to recommend your own or another garden, contact me at the UW-Extension office.

See you next year. Happy Gardening!

Linda Warren,

Horticulture Program Assistant

To the Editor:

On July 15, the leader of the Wisconsin State Democratic Party put out a press release touting Obama’s Economic Recovery Act by stating and I quote - “In fact, to date the Recovery Act has supported 63 jobs here in this state.”

The following day the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel online printed a story - again I quote - “According to data released Thursday by the state Department of Workforce Development, private employers shed 1,000 positions in June”

Let’s see — government created 63 jobs and the private sector lost 1,000 jobs. If the leadership of the State Democratic Party is proud that Wisconsin received $1.29 billion in stimulus funds (according to www.recovery.org) and now is happy they used that money to create (or save) 63 jobs then my friends we are in deep do-do.

Yes, I am the Chairman of the Marinette County Republican Party. However, I do not consider myself a card carrying Republican. I, like most of you, consider myself a Conservative and as Conservatives we need to band together to stop this ignorance on both sides of the aisle.

As James Madison so eloquently stated, “I cannot undertake to lay my finger on that article of the Constitution which granted a right to Congress of expending, on objects of benevolence, the money of their constituents.” Our leadership has lost this constitutional principle.

On Saturday, Aug. 14, the Marinette County Republican Party is hosting their annual “Remembering Ronald Reagan Corn Roast at the Evergreen Park in Wausaukee from 4 p.m.-8 p.m. We encourage all Conservative minded people, Tea Party People, ACE People, Independents, Blue Dog Democrats and yes even my Democratic friends who are tired of runaway government to come out and join together for an afternoon of friendship. Meet your Republican Candidates one last time prior to the primary in September.

Corn, brats, hamburgers, salads and a lot more for only $10 per person. Tickets are now on sale throughout the county or feel free to contact me. We are also raffling off four guns. Tickets for the gun raffle are $5 each or three for $10.

Mail your checks indicating the total quantity of corn roast tickets ($10 per person) and/or gun raffle tickets ($5 each or three for $10) with a self-addressed stamped envelope to the MCRP, P.O. Box 662, Marinette WI 54143.

Ted Story,

Marinette GOP Chairman
