Fern O. Carlson Pastor Franklin Hazelo will officiate at funeral services at Gillett Baptist Church, Town Hall Road, Town of Gillett on Friday, July 30 at 11 a.m., for Fern O. Carlson, 85, of Gillett.
Friends may call from 4 p.m. until 8 p.m. on Thursday, July 29 at Kuehl Funeral Home, Gillett and on Friday at the church from 10 a.m. until time of service. Interment will be in Wanderers Rest Cemetery, Gillett. She passed away on Sunday, July 25 at Woodlands of Gillett.
Born April 2, 1925 on the family farm located near Mosling, she was the second of five children born to Alfred and Esther Carlson. She grew up as a happy, healthy, hardworking farm girl and graduated from Mosling Grade School and Gillett High School in 1943.
Following graduation she earned her teaching certificate at Marinette County Normal and taught all eight grades at Apple Orchard School and then at Townsend Grade School. Recognizing a need to learn more about the Bible, she enrolled at the Lutheran Bible Institute and completed a three year program. Experiencing God’s call to the mission field, she enrolled in the Missionary Health Institute to learn medical skills applicable to foreign mission work.
In 1954 she boarded a freighter bound for South Africa as a missionary, serving with the Evangelical Alliance Mission. She served first at the Mosvold Mission Hospital Station and later ran a bush country dispensary, both located in Zululand. She was later assigned to run the Missionary Children’s Home in Vryheid, Natal. Her caring, loving nature, teaching experience and medical training made her ideally suited. She served there for nearly 20 years as home manager, mother, nurse, spiritual leader, advisor, comforter and disciplinarian to 20 to 30 children of missionaries who were working deep in the bush country of Zululand. Along with this she ministered extensively to nearby native women and children.
After 26 years in Zululand, she returned home to care for her widowed and ailing mother. Following her mother’s death she worked for the Shawano County Nursing Department for a number of years. After her departure from Africa she continued to minister in many ways, as a Sunday School teacher, church worker, host to missionaries, volunteer, liberal giver and prayer warrior.
She is survived by a sister, Carol (Hank) Stone of Hampshire, Ill.; a brother, Lee of Gillett; a sister-in-law, Elaine Larson of Carrolton, Tex. and many nieces and nephews.
Preceding her in death were a brother, Roy; a brother-in-law, Marvin Larson and a sister-in-law, Audrey Carlson.
