Legion Baseball

Post 39 Stays Strong With 5 Wins

Post 39 Takes

Down Oconto Falls

Tuesday evening at Pedersen Ball Park, the Marinette Post 39 Legion team played host to the Oconto Falls Legion squad.  In a grind of a game, Marinette won 3-1 despite a 10 hit performance from the Oconto Falls offense.

In the bottom of the first inning, Nick Sailer led off with a walk for Marinette and made it to third base on a throwing error.  Sailer would come around to score on a wild pitch giving Post 39 a 1-0 lead.

Oconto Falls tied the game at 1-1 in the fourth inning as Riley Gruetzmacher led the inning off with a triple before scoring on a ground out.   Marinette answered in their half of the fourth when Matt Osterberg crushed a two-out double.  Osterberg was plated on a single from Luke Johnson giving Marinette the lead once again, 2-1.

Post 39 added an insurance run in the sixth when Blake Margis smacked a one-out single.  Three walks loaded the bases and pushed home Margis for Marinette's third run, 3-1.

Marinette held on for the win behind a complete game performance from James Jagielski on the mound.  Jagielski scattered ten hits throughout his seven innings giving up just one earned run, two walks and striking out five hitters.

Gruetzmacher took the loss for Oconto Falls as he went six innings giving up three earned runs on just four hits, four walks and six strikeouts.

Luke Johnson paced the Marinette offense with a two for two day with an RBI while Blake Margis and Matt Osterberg recorded one for three days.

Kamin VandenLangenberg went three for four on the day for Oconto Falls including three singles.  Teammate Evan Sigmund added two hits in his four at-bats with two singles.

Big Second Inning Propels

Marinette to Win

Over Menominee

The Marinette and Menominee Legion Baseball teams faced off for a Fourth of July M&M showdown Monday evening with the Marinette Legion setting off some fireworks during the second inning to win 7-3.

Though the Marinette boys took the competition by a wide margin, it was Menominee that jumped to the early lead. Adam Nolde was the first scored runner. Reaching on a single he advanced on an error, slipped to third on a sacrifice fly and crossed the plate on a Jason Janquart fly out.

Then the second began, and Marinette made sure to squeeze every score they could out of it.

Nick Daye was first to reach, doing so after being hit by a pitch. Matt Osterberg followed by reaching off an error along with Kevin Charlesworth who also took advantage of an error to make it on base. Both Daye and Osterberg went home off an error to take the 2-1 lead. Nemetz kept things going with a walk and James Jagielski scored another runner off a single. Nemetz crossed the plate for the fourth run of the night for Marinette thanks to a Bailey Brix RBI single. Brix also crossed home thanks to an Osterberg walk to give Marinette a commanding 6-1 lead.

Menominee returned fire during the third when Nolde singled and progressed his way to third base. While waiting for his chance to go home, Nolde got a free ride thanks to a walk.

Janquart narrowed the lead with an RBI single that brought home Nathan Nowack.

Marinette added one more run during the match up during the fourth. Bailey Brix reached on a single, made his way to third on the ensuing at bats, and crossed the plate on a wild pitch.

Trey Bretl took the win for Marinette with one strikeout and two walks. He allowed three earned runs on five hits.

Nowack took the loss while striking out four and walking six. He also allowed seven runs (one earned) on four hits.

For Marinette, Jagielski was two of three with one run and one RBI. Brix was one of four with two runs and one RBI.

Menominee was led by Janquart with a one of three plate showings with two RBIs.

Marinette Wins Two,

Rallies Past Sheboygan

Marinette Legion Post 39 played host to Sheboygan in a non-conference double header Friday afternoon at Pedersen Ball Park.  After digging a deep hole in game one, Marinette used a six-run sixth inning to win 7-6.  Post 39 kept their momentum going in game two as they won 4-2.

Sheboygan took Pedersen Ball Park by storm quickly taking a 6-0 lead as they scored four runs in the first inning and two more in the second inning.  However, the Marinette squad never quit.  In the fourth inning, Bailey Brix reached via an error and would come around to score as a bases loaded walk brought Brix home.  Marinette trimmed the lead to 6-1.

Heading into the bottom of the sixth with the same score, Post 39 batted around the order to take the lead.  Blake Margis started the inning with a base hit followed by another base hit from Spencer Hipke.  With two on and no outs, two errors allowed Matt Osterberg and Luke Johnson to reach safely.  Caylubb Maske drew a walk and Alex Nemetz singled to reach base.  This brought up the top of the order where Nick Sailer hit a sacrifice fly, Kevin Konyn doubled and the final run was brought in on Brix's sac-fly.  Marinette grabbed a 7-6 lead.

Kevin Charlesworth shut down Sheboygan in the top of the seventh to seal the victory.  Charlesworth earned the win with his five and two-thirds innings pitched in relief, not allowing a run while giving up three hits, three walks and three strikeouts. Hipke went 1-for-1 in the game with a single while Nemetz completed a 1-for-3 game.

After the slugfest that was game one of the double header with Sheboygan, both team's bats seemed to cool off just a bit, as Marinette trudged its way to a 4-2 win to sweep the double header series.

Marinette's James Jagielski got things going for Marinette in game two with a first inning double. Nick Daye continued his fantastic season with a RBI single to take the lead.

Inning two saw Kevin Konyn reach base on an error before rounding his way to third base, but thanks to good pitching by Sheboygan's Logon Cayon, Marinette would be unable to get the run across.

Sheboygan responded during the bottom of the third with a Eric Johnson run off a Dylan Lindow double.

The tie didn't take long to overcome as Marinette's bats started to heat up during the fourth.

Nick Daye led off the fourth inning with a walk followed by Matt Osterberg on a walk. Konyn sacrificed to advance the runners while Tyler Olsen loaded the bases after being struck by a pitch.

Caylubb Maske stepped up big for the Marinette boys, slugging a single to left which allowed Daye and Osterberg to race their way to the plate for the 3-1 lead.

Marinette's final run was scored during the sixth when Kevin Charlesworth made it on with a walk. He was brought home by Jagielski's single.

Sheboygan's Weston Jurk narrowed the lead with a an RBI in the bottom half of the sixth.

Marinette's defense stood strong in the final inning though a runner did make his way to second.

Tommy Sawinski posted the win for Marinette with one strikeout and two walks. He allowed two runs (one earned) on five hits.

Cayon took the loss for Sheboygan allowing three earned runs on four hits while giving up three walks.

Daye was two for two at the plate with one run and one RBI. Jagielski was two of four with one run and one RBI while Maske went one for four with two RBIs.

Marinette Legion Survives

Close Call with Ashport

Taking on the Ashport Legion team, the Marinette Post 39 boys secured a 2-1 victory Wednesday night.

Good pitching and defense by both teams equated to a scoreless game after three innings.

During the top of the fourth inning, Ashport took the initiative scoring a Zak Imig run off a Connor Sullivan fly ball.

It would have been Ashport's game, and almost was, but thanks to singles by Luke Johnson and Kevin Konyn and a two RBI single by Bailey Brix, the Marinette boys were able to overcome their opponents in a game ending score.

Matt Osterberg registered the mound win for Marinette, striking out 10 while allowing one earned run on two hits.

Will Ark took the loss with five strike outs, two walks and two earned runs given up on eight hits.

Brix was one of four at the plate with two RBIs while Konyn and Johnson both went two of three with a run.
