The 2016 JV Legion Regional tournament was held at Pedersen Ball Park this past weekend. After a strong beginning, the Marinette Post 39 JV squad fell in their next two contests. The Green Bay Shockers lost the winners' bracket final to Pulaski before fighting back to take down Pulaski twice in the championship. The Shockers advance to the state tournament held in Plover this weekend.
Thursday evening Marinette played against the West De Pere Legion team. After a short rain delay in the fifth, Jack Farley delivered a clutch base hit to score Austin Marquardt and Gavin Brissette giving Post 39 a 2-0 advantage. A bit of trouble tied the game at 2-2 in the bottom of fifth. Marinette took the lead again in the sixth as Adam Wahl doubled off of the wall before scoring on a Riley Reif two-bagger. Marquardt came in for the two-out save in the seventh and Post 39 won their opening game, 3-2. Six batters recorded one hit each for Marinette including Farley who went one for four with two RBI. Trey Bretl earned the mound win with six and a third innings pitched. Bretl gave up two runs, none earned, on one hit, five walks and eight strikeouts.
Marinette lost their second game against the Green Bay Shockers Friday night. After digging themselves a 9-3 hole, Post 39 gave it one last push in the top of the seventh. Marinette scored five runs in their half of the seventh to cut the lead to 9-8. With the go-ahead run on second base, the Shockers were able to coax a strikeout to end the game. Trey Bretl led the way for Post 39 with a three for five game including two RBI. Matt Eldredge suffered the loss in his three innings of work. Eldredge gave up six runs, four earned, on six hits and a walk while striking out two hitters.
Post 39 came back Saturday afternoon to play against Green Bay Southwest. After a tough start, Marinette found themselves in a 6-0 hole. Another late push came up short as Post 39 suffered a difficult loss. In the sixth inning, Marinette scored two runs to chip away at the lead, 6-2. In their final at bat, Post 39 added two more runs. Rylie Nelson, Austin Marquardt and Jack Farley each drew a walk. Trey Bretl hit an RBI ground-out and Adam Wahl was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Matt Eldredge laced an RBI single to center field to score the second run. GB Southwest forced the final out of the game to take the win 6-4. Cole Tackmier suffered the loss for Marinette with two and two-thirds innings pitched. In that time, Tackmier gave up five earned runs on four hits and four walks while striking out four. Bretl led the Marinette offense with a two for four day while Nelson and Marquardt each went one for two.
In the winners' bracket final matchup, the Green Bay Shockers took on Pulaski. Pulaski pulled off the 7-5 victory to advance to the championship game. The Shockers were sent to the losers' bracket to take on Green Bay Southwest. The GB Shockers earned a 15-3 win to send themselves to the championship game setting up a rematch against Pulaski. Pulaski was double-dipped in the championship by the Shockers 9-3 and 17-2 sending the GB Shockers to Plover for the state tournament.
