Redbirds Avenge Last Year's Playoff Defeat
In a rematch of the 2015 championship game, the Marinette Redbirds took on the Peshtigo Predators for a chance to play for the 2016 Wishigan League title. The game featured Ryan Woods for Marinette facing off on the mound against Tyler Marquardt for Peshtigo.
In the top of the first inning, Nick Sailer began the game with a base hit. After stealing second base and a walk to Russ Smith, Sailer and Smith pulled off a double steal to put runners on second and third. Two quick outs allowed the Redbirds to get out of the inning with no damage done.
Marinette then took the offensive. Jordan Powers led off with a single before an error allowed him to reach third base. Another error plated Powers and the Redbirds took a 1-0 lead. Powers led the way again in the third inning as he laced a base hit to center field. Jason Hofer followed with a single of his own to reach safely before Cody Bezio's single scored Powers. Scottie Eldredge followed suit with the Redbirds' fourth single of the inning which would score Hofer giving Marinette a 3-0 advantage.
After his team helped get him a solid lead, Woods would allow just one hit the rest of the game as Marinette went on to take a 3-0 victory. Woods pitched all seven shutout innings allowing just three hits and two walks while fanning seven batters.
Tyler Marquardt suffered the hard fought loss giving up three runs, two earned, on six hits and two walks while striking out three batters.
Eldredge led the Marinette offense with a two for three day including a double and an RBI while Powers went two for four with two runs scored. Sailer, Marquardt and Darius Dohl recorded the three Predator hits.
