Coleman Sends Six Wrestlers To State; Florence/Niagara, Oconto Send 1 Each

Six Coleman wrestlers advanced to state competition from the Division III Sectional in Bonduel on Saturday, Feb. 18.

Advancing to state for Coleman were Koltin Grzybowski, Caleb Gross, Billy Ganter, Jake Baldwin, Jordan Blanchard and Donovan Salewski. The Coleman contingent will be joined on the Division 3 mats by Florence/Niagara's Shamus McLain, Oconto's Aiden Wusterbarth.

Grzybowski (106) placed third to earn his place at state. He began with a 10-4 decision win over 30-7 Dane Klinger of Marathon, but was defeated in the semifinal by Cian Fischer of Weyauwega-Fremont, who is 41-4 on the year, by 8-3 decision. He received a bye in the consolation semifinal, and advanced with a 2:31 pin of Wittenberg-Birnamwood's Chad Moegenburg. That put him through to the second-place match, but he was slated to face Fischer again, so Fischer took second by rule. Grzybowski is 37-3 on the year.

Gross (113) took three straight to place first in his weight class. He received a bye in the quarterfinal, then won his next two by major decision and pin. He won by 15-2 major decision over Dylan Baird of Auburndale, then pinning Athens' Carter Brunke in 1:24. "Caleb had another excellent performance and dominated the entire field," Coleman Head Coach Kevin Casper said.

Ganter placed third at 126. He started with a loss to 36-4 Derek Marten of Stratford. In the consolation semifinal, he won by 6-1 decision over Wabeno/Laona's Derek Moravec, and took the third-place match with a 6-4 sudden victory when over Rosholt's Hampton Kedrowicz. In the second-place match, he was forced into a medical forfeit to Oconto's Aiden Wusterbarth in the second-place match. "Billy had an awesome day," Coach Casper said, referencing a 4-0 deficit Ganter came back from in the third-place match. "To come back from that deficit and send it into overtime and get the takedown in overtime to win was just one heck of a performance to show how he wasn't going to be denied."

Baldwin (132) took second for the Cougars to earn his spot in Madison. He pinned Crandon's Jacob Hoyt in 64 seconds, but was defeated in the semifinal by 40-2 Jake Drexler of Stratford by 5-1 decision. Baldwin would bounce back, winning his next three matches. He pinned Wittenberg-Birnamwood's Will Urquhart in the consolation semis, took a 9-1 major decision over Wabeno/Laona's Brenden Dorner and won by 6-2 decision over Shiocton's Sawyer Theobald. "Baldwin had a very good day in a bracket that was very tough," Casper said, saying Baldwin's comeback to take second was done in "dominant fashion."

Blanchard topped all wrestlers at 170 with three straight wins. He won by 5-1 decision against Auburndale's Kellar Wolfe. He pinned Manawa's Ben Beyer in 22 seconds, but the first-place match was much closer. He needed a sudden victory period to defeat Bonduel's Jacob Banker in the first-place match. Banker is 32-5 on the year. Blanchard's record advanced to 36-3 this year. Blanchard battled sickness all day, Casper said, but said "it tells you about his will to win, mind over matter."

Salewski (285) got three pins in three matches to advance to state in dominant fashion. He pinned Florence/Niagara's Jeff Kiszonas in 18 seconds, 40-4 Tyson Sommer of Athens in 4:12 and Tyson Hoffman of Stratford in two minutes flat. "Salewski wrestled unbelievably. He wrestled like a man possessed," Casper said of his heavyweight.

Florence/Niagara's McLain placed second at 145, going 4-1 on the day to advance his record to 44-3 and secure a place in Madison over the weekend. He opened with a 16-0 tech fall over Tri-County's Eric Buechner, who is 23-13 this season. He then suffered his only loss, with Athens' Austin Engel defeating him by 7-5 decision. Engel is 33-5 on the year. McLain rebounded to pin Gillett/Suring's Reid Winkler in 23 seconds and Stratford's Jordan Becker in 1:39. Having already secured a place at state, he won in the second-place match by medical forfeit over Shiocton's 38-3 Levi Snortum.

Oconto's Aiden Wusterbarth (126) also placed second in his weight class. He opened with a pin of Auburndale's Isaiah Hasenohrl in 3:31, then was part of two tight decisions, winning one. He won a 5-4 decision over Rosholt's Hampton Kedrowicz, who is 30-10 this season, but was defeated by 36-4 Derek Marten of Stratford in the first-place match by 8-5 decision. He was scheduled to face Coleman's Billy Ganter in the second-place match, but Wusterbarth took second off of a medical forfeit. Wusterbarth is 35-5 heading into state competition.

Additionally, Coleman's Jacob Zeitler took fourth at 195. He opened with a pin in 3:09, but was pinned in the semifinal, with Aiden Hoffman of Stratford, 34-9, advancing to the final. Zeitler pinned Wabeno/Laona's Dylan Houts in the consolation semifinal, but lost via 3:26 pin to 39-4 Alex Lemanski of Edgar in the third-place match.

Also wrestling for the Cougars were Sam Kuchta (120), John Bieber (152) and Brock Martinson (220). Kuchta was pinned in the quarterfinal, Bieber opened with a pin but was pinned in his next two matches and Martinson lost both his matches via pin. State hopeful, Bryce Bardon, who advanced to the sectional, was unable to compete having suffered a concussion prior to competition.

"You always feel bad for the others that didn't make it but the good news they are all freshmen and sophomores so they will get there in future years, I'm sure," Coach Casper said about his team.

Also wrestling for Florence/Niagara were Tristen Mascarette (120), who lost his only two matches by decision and major decision, 6-3 and 15-6, along with Joe Glime, who was pinned in his only match by 39-4 Alex Lemanski of Edgar and Jeff Kiszonas, who was pinned by Coleman's 36-6 Donovan Salewski and Athens' 40-4 Tyson Sommer.

Tyler Wusterbarth (138) also wrestled for Oconto, coming very close to his own state berth. He won his quarterfinal matchup in 1:52, pinning Tri-County's Tyler Kramer, but lost via tech fall to 14-0 Jeremy Schoenherr of Stratford. He rebounded to take a 10-7 decision over Wabeno/Laona's Tanner Dorner, which put him in the third-place match with a spot at state on the line. He was defeated by sudden victory, 8-6, with Pittsville's Tyler Dammann earning his 36th win of the year and advancing to state.

Three Crivitz wrestlers competed at the sectional. Michael Retza (138) lost his opening match by 6-4 decision, while Hunter Myszka (160) and Joseph Tomaszewski (220) were pinned in two matchups each.

Wyatt Herzog (106) and Reid Winkler (145) were each pinned twice while competing for Gillett/Suring.

Six Wabeno/Laona wrestlers competed, with Brenden Dorner (132) coming closest to a state berth.

Dorner was pinned in 2:59 in the quarterfinal, losing to Shiocton's Sawyer Theobald. He rebounded with a decision win in the consolation semifinal over Beau Merritt of Pittsville, 31-9 this season, but was defeated by Coleman's Jake Baldwin in the third-place match via 9-1 major decision to miss out on state by just one spot.

Wabeno/Laona's Derek Moravec (126) won his opening match with a pin, but lost in his next two matches, including one to Coleman's Billy Ganter by decision. Also wrestling for the team were Jarrat Lane (113), Ty Heuer (120), Tanner Dorner (138) and Dylan Houts (195).
