THE CITY REBORN FROM THE ASHES OF AMERICA'S MOST DISASTROUS FOREST FIRE
Elaine (Birr) Gaertig, 85, of Oconto Falls, passed away early Sunday morning, March 19 at home surrounded by her children.
Born Jan. 16, 1932 in Two Rivers, to Henry and Felicie (Halsted) Birr, she married Gerald Gaertig on Dec. 16, 1950 at St. John's Lutheran Church in the Town of Morgan. They owned and operated a family farm in Morgan for many years and enjoyed bear hunting together.
A member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Morgan, she enjoyed gardening, listening to old country music and attending Porterfield Music Fest, but especially being a Mom and grandma.
Survivors are three children, Arnold (Carolyn) Gaertig, Suzanne Kostichka and Beverly (Duane) Gilbertson, all of Oconto Falls; a daughter-in-law, Colleen Gaertig, Brookside; 11 grandchildren; many great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; three sisters-in-law, Betty Birr, Krakow, Marcella Schroeder, Suring and Alice Leitzke, Oconto Falls and many nieces and nephews.
Along with her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Gerald in 1993; two sons, Everett and Wayne and three brothers, Otis, Earl and Alvin.
Visitation will be held at St. John's Lutheran Church in Morgan on Thursday, March 23 from 9 a.m. until the time of the funeral services at 11 a.m. Rev. Lloyd Luedeman will officiate followed by burial in the Town of Morgan Cemetery. Jones Funeral Service of Oconto Falls is assisting the family with arrangements.
