Margaret H. Zutz
Margaret Hildegarde (Firgens) Zutz, 89, passed away Thursday, March 2.
Born April 30, 1927 in Breed, to John and Anna Firgens, she was raised with her younger sister, Lucille and brother, Rudolph. She graduated from Oconto Falls High School and attended Bellin Memorial Hospital School of Nursing as a member of the U.S. Cadet Nurse Corps to become a Registered Nurse.
She met Carl H. Zutz, Jr. while working at the hospital in Green Bay and they married on Jan. 29, 1949, living first in Manitowoc and later in Appleton and Madison as their family grew to seven children. She worked third shifts at Theda Clark Hospital in Neenah-Menasha and the University Hospital in Madison while raising their children.
She enjoyed gardening, sewing, volunteering, bowling, traveling, baking homemade bread and attending reunions with classmates. In retirement they lived in Conover for years on North Twin Lake. Later they were in Brillion, and the Homme Home in Wittenberg.
A strong woman of faith, she served at church sewing quilts, cooking for confirmation classes and special events, teaching Bible School and a special ed Bible class for many years.
She is survived by her husband of 68 years, Carl; children John (Edie) Zutz, JoAnn (Bob) Giese, Carl (Kate) Mckillip Zutz, Barbara (Craig) Benell, Paul Zutz, Elizabeth (Mark) Stiller and Karen (John) Rendall; a sister, Lucille Coppens of Oconto Falls; 10 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
A private memorial service will be held at St. Bartholomew Lutheran Church in Brillion with an inurnment in Manitowoc at a later date. Memorials can be made to the Margaret H. Zutz Scholarship Fund at Bellin School of Nursing, Green Bay, Wi. Schmidt and Schulta Funeral Home of Wittenberg is assisting the family with arrangements.
