Marines Win Peshtigo Invite, Bulldogs Second

Marinette Victory


After losing two of their top three golfers from last year's team that placed fifth at state, Marinette's boys golf team started the year with a win at the Peshtigo Invitational at Little River Country Club on Saturday, April 8.

Mike Wagner, who took 36th at state in Division II last season, led the Marines with a 79, the best score of any golfer on the day. A 38 on the back nine tied for the best on the day. "It was nice to see Mike Wagner as the medalist. He works hard at his game and deserves it," said Marinette Head Coach Cary Waloway.

The biggest improvement of any golfer, however, may have come from Matt Wagner, who finished tied for 51st at state last season, shooting 93 and 110 at state. He opened the season Saturday with an 82, the Marines' second best score on the day, and one of the top scores at the invitational.

Dakota Langlois, who returns for his senior year following a tie for 14th at state last season, shot an 85. Marine varsity newcomers Wes Knutson and Carson Lovedale shot 90 and 101, respectively. They'll be tasked with replacing 10th-place state finisher Garrett Waloway and Ben Thielen, who tied for 25th at state.

"It's always good to start the year off with a win, but my players weren't really happy with their scores," Coach Waloway said. "I think after Saturday's round, each player knows what he needs to work on."

Peshtigo, who comes into this season with high expectations for a team led by three seniors, finished eight strokes behind Marinette. Senior Bryce Jacobson posted the day's second best score, shooting a 38 on the back nine en route to an 81. Fellow senior Tyler Lund shot an 82, as did junior Trent Carriveau. Senior Dylon Gilligan posted a 99 and junior Ty Davis shot a 114.

Peshtigo Head Coach Pete Kretz said his team was disappointed in their result. "We were a little disappointed in taking second behind Marinette," he said. "We know that we will have to play better to beat a team that continually goes to state."

"We have to eliminate the triple bogeys," Kretz said. "The compounding of mistakes is really what needs to be eliminated. Sometimes a bogey is a good score. To try and correct a bad sot by making a miraculous shot never works."

Coleman took third, 32 strokes off of Marinette's pace. Casey Casper led the Cougars with a 40 on the back nine and an 84 total. Cody Van Hoff, coming off a 40 earlier in the week, shot a 90 in total, with a 43 on the back nine. Garrett Johnson shot a 95, Dan Rogge shot a 99 and Tyler Saleski took a 101.

Oconto shot a 372 as a team, just four strokes back of Coleman and good for fourth place. Their top golfer was Aiden Wusterbarth, who shot an 84. Andrew Westphal was next, as he finished with a 91. Spencer Leary carded a 95, Tyler Wusterbarth shot ten strokes better on the back nine for a 102 and Peyton Boucher ended with 121.

Wausaukee came in eighth as a team with a score of 423. Senior Tony Rollo shot the day's best front nine, finishing the front half with a 38. The back nine was not as strong, however, as he shot a 51 to finish with an 89. Senior Sawyer Dunlap also shot a 51 on the back nine, but finished with a 103. Senior Jason Jaworski finished with a 104, freshman Cooper Rollo shot a 127, and sophomore Gerard Elfering was the final Ranger with a score of 139.

Crivitz was ten strokes back of Wausaukee with a team 433. Their best golfer was Shane Bauer, who finished with a 91. Travis Giese shot a 51, Abby Barley carded a 117, Eli Lawrence finished with 118 and Mason Marvin finished the day with a 121.

Four golfers for Pembine competed, led by Ethan Metras and his 93. Next was Evan Metras, who finished with a 107. Wyatt Marcy started strong with a 50 but fell off on the back nine to finish with 112, and Logan Molony shot 68 on the front and back for a 136. Their collective 448 would be good for tenth.

Niagara took 11th, shooting a collective 461. Josh Goudreau started them off with a 90, helped by a 43 on the front nine. Cole Brown finished with a 101, Tristin Colenso carded a 107 and Emma Nanninga rounded out the Niagara golfers with a 163.

Crandon took fourth with 380, Bonduel placed fifth as a team with 396 and Menominee Indian shot 414 to come in sixth.

St. Thomas Aquinas Academy had three golfers compete. Christian Hornick shot a 106, Tyler Stuart shot a 116 and Eric Powers finished with a total of 124.

Lena had two golfers at the invite. Jacob Staidl shot a 97 with a 46 on the back nine, while Colby Borchert shot a 59 on the front and back nine for a total of 118.

Menominee's one golfer, Evan Kramer, shot a 42 on the front and back to finish with a total of 84.

Three Lakes also had three golfers compete, the best of which shot a 114.

Cougars Win Triangular

at Hunters Glen


Coleman's golfers defeated Crivitz and Oconto on Thursday, April 6 behind a strong performance from Cody Van Hoff, who shot a 40 at Hunter's Glen Golf Club.

Coleman shot a 185 as a team, beating the 189 posted by Oconto and the 207 of Crivitz. After Van Hoff, Tyler Salesky's 46 was good for second on the team. Nathan Woulf shot a 49, while Garrett Johnson shot a 50 and Ryan Terp shot a 51.

Oconto finished just four strokes behind Coleman as a team. Andrew Westphal was the Blue Devils' best golfer on the day, as he finished with a 43. Aiden Wusterbarth finished with a 43, Spencer Leary shot a 46 and Peyton Boucher carded a 53. Tyler Wusterbarth rounded out the Oconto scores with a 63.

For Crivitz, Shane Bauer was the leader, posting a 44. Travis Giese was next with a 51. Mason Marvin and Ebby Barley each shot a 54 and Sam Spinx carded a 55.

Colby Borchert shot a 71 for Lena.
