THE CITY REBORN FROM THE ASHES OF AMERICA'S MOST DISASTROUS FOREST FIRE
Laurel (Messenger) Stepien, 94, formerly of Amberg, passed away Sunday, April 23 at Rennes Health Care Center-East.
Born Jan. 27, 1923 in Oconto County, to the late Herbert and Lenore (Grady) Messenger, she and her husband Vernon owned and operated Stepien's Grocery and Restaurant for 20 years. Their restaurant was known to have the best Hamburgers and Pies.
She enjoyed flowers, especially growing African Violets, reading, especially the newspaper and in younger years, bowling and golfing. A devoted grandmother, she was happy living the last 10 years of her life at Evergreen Assisted Living in Kingsford.
She is survived by three daughters, Peggy (John) Erhart, Coleen (Michael) Bereza and Connie (Dennis) Gusick; a special brother, Dale (Sandy) Stepien; three grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Marion and Nancy and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Vernon and seven siblings.
A private family funeral service with burial will be held in Amberg Cemetery. Roubal Funeral Home of Wausaukee is assisting the family.
