Marinette to Host 7th Annual Logging, Heritage Fest July 7-9

Awesome things are in store for the seventh annual Marinette Logging & Heritage Festival to be held July 7, 8 and 9 this year.

To start everything off, again this year, are the Menominee Nation Dancers and a traditional Fish Boil, sponsored by the Marinette Moose Lodge, to be held from 3 to 7 pm at Red Arrow Park. The Menominee Nation tribe tracks its roots to the mouth of the Menominee River, where the City of Marinette now sits. The Menominee Nation is the only present-day tribe in Wisconsin whose original story states that they have always been native to the state. If additional parking is needed for Red Arrow Park, there will be free parking at Harbor Town Marine, 203 E. Russell St., with a shuttle-bus available.

Starting at approximately 9 pm, the free Family Movie on the Island will be "The Lego Batman" Movie. Bring lawn chairs and blankets for this popular family event. New this year, will be a children's bicycle raffled off to a lucky child, compliments of Riverside Auto. Refreshments will be available.

Events on July 8th open with the seventh annual Ella Smetana Memorial 5K run/Walk at the Marinette Welcome Center at 8 am. A Marine Corps "Call to Colors" ceremony will be held at 10 am at the flag pole area on festival grounds on Stephenson Island, and the Triple C Riders River Cities Charity ride starts at 11 am. It leaves Applejacks, 20 W. Hosmer St., and leads a parade of bikes through town. Festivities on Stephenson Island will be "open" all day beginning at 11 am on July 8. Offered will be entertainment, music, food and craft vendors from local organizations and businesses and a variety of events throughout the day. There will also be a large Informational tent with several organizations, Menominee Arts Council, Wisconsin Trappers Association, Habitat for Humanity, Cemetery Walk Group, UW-Marinette, and Wisconsin Bicycle Federation (Bike Rodeo) participating. Natural History Items will be displayed from 1 to 4 pm by T.O.A.D.

Live music "Senior Moments" will play Jazz, Bluegrass, Old Time Rock, and 40's 50's tunes on the east side of the Welcome Center at 1 pm as attendees make their way to Stephenson Island on the foot bridge across the river.

Returning acts include the Great Lakes Timber Show, Mischief & Majik entertainment, inflatable bouncers and free ice-cream for children age 12 and under at 2 pm. The "GoodFellas" will be performing beginning at 2 pm in the large stage pavilion.

Theatre on the Bay will give a sneak preview performance of the locally written play "Menominee River Mysteries" at 1:15 pm. The original play was written by Anthony LaMalfa is set to "bring local history to life".

At 4 pm the "Rolling Thunder" will again bring the patriotic "Missing Man" ceremony to the large pavilion. This ceremony is also known as the fallen Comrade Table and is done in memory of fallen, missing, or imprisoned military service-members. Ceremony script read during the ceremony pays honors to the POW-MIA.

Also planned are Lumberjack Show, Lego Batman movie, fish boil, childrens ice cream giveaway, Great Lakes timber show, display from Wisconsin Trappers Association, inflatable bouncers for the kids.

The evening entertainment, starting at 7 pm will bring back the ever popular "Cougars" live band leading up to the majestic fireworks display at dusk. Retiring of the flags will take place at 9:30 pm by members of the retired Marine Corps.

A free shuttle bus will run from 11 am to 11 pm on July 8 and 9, departing and returning at Jack's Fresh Market in Menominee to allow ease in parking availability.

On Sunday morning, July 9 the festival kicks off again with an Interfaith Worship Service on Stephenson Island at 10 am. The annual parade, with a new route down Main Street, begins at Marinette Middle School on Water Street, then goes to Wells Street, and heads downtown at noon. Parade marshals are Captains Carol and Ron Lemirand from the Marinette Salvation Army.

The Annual Riverside Bike & Car Show begins with registration at 10 am and the show to go from noon to 4 pm. Weather permitting, the show will continue to be held on Stephenson Island. It will be held on Riverside Avenue if rain and wet conditions are a problem. There is no fee to exhibit and Best of Show trophies for all classes will be awarded.

A returning favorite to the Festival is the Beard Growing Contest, scheduled for 2:30 pm at the staging area of the Car Show. Interested and bearded persons can register to be judged and complete for prize-winning categories such as Fullest, Sexiest, Scruffiest, and even Best Try.

A new event for children, 12 and under, is the "Sawdust Dig", where cash in change will be hidden in straw and "dug out" in intervals, according to age, at 2 pm. Marinette Police Department Explorers Scouts will help the children participate.

Also on July 9, two adult bicycles, donated by Riverside Auto will be raffled off around 2:45 pm. Donations to the Salvation Army Teen Center will qualify a chance to register for the raffle. The registration and forms will be available both days at the Marinette Kiwanis food booth.

While the weekend for the festival draws closer, there are still opportunities for the community to help out and participate. Community and corporate sponsorships are needed, with spaces available for craft vendors spots and parade entries. For more information call Jan at 715-732-5139 and for parade entries, call Lana at 715-732-5141. Entries are also available at the Marinette Welcome Center, 1680 Bridge St., Marinette, or at: www.marinette.wi.us or www.marinetteloggingandheritagefestival.com.
