Sailer Returns To Marinette Legion; Puts On Hitting Clinic
Marinette Legion Grounds Bluejays
The Marinette Legion baseball team took a pair of wins over the visiting Green Bay Bluejays Monday night. Behind a great mound effort by Matt Osterberg Marinette shutout the Bluejays in game one 10-0 while game two was more of the same with the Bluejays managing to squeak out a few runs 12-4.
Marinette got to work early in game one as Nick Sailer, returning from college at Missouri Baptist, made contact with his first pitch back for a single.
Adam Wahl walked and Nick Daye hit a sacrifice fly to center to bring in Sailer. Wahl made it home off an error while Trey Bretl reached on a single and scored on an overthrow for the 3-0 lead.
The third inning saw Wahl reach after being struck by a pitch and score off a wild pitch.
With the lead firmly in their grasp Marinette looked to end the game early over the fourth and fifth innings.
Matt Eldredge walked to lead off and was brought in by Nick Sailer on a triple. James Jagielski scored off a Daye sac fly while Wahl scored off a Riley Reid singlenfor the 8-0 lead.
Jagielski capped the game off with a two RBI single to end the game early 10-0.
Matt Osterberg took the win allowing two hits and walking one while striking out eight.
Erik Perez took the loss giving up five hits, eight runs (six earned) and seven walks while striking out two.
At the plate Marinette was led by Sailer who was perfect on the day four for four. He also had two runs and one RBI.
Marinette showed no mercy over the second game as Sailer got things rolling by reaching base on an error to lead off the inning. He went home on an error as well while Wahl scored off an Osterberg fly ball to center.
Rylie Nelson crossed the plate in the second inning thanks to a Sailer single while Wahl and Osterberg improved the lead to 5-0 over the third.
Daye highlighted the fourth inning after he clubbed a two RBI double for the 9-0 lead.
The Bluejays responded with four runs over the fourth but Marinette kept pouring it on over the closing innings. Wrapping the game up in the seventh with runs from Jagielski, Nelson and Cole Tackmier.
Austin Marquardt took the mound win allowing seven hits, four runs (two earned) and two walks while striking out eight.
At the plate Marinette's Osterberg was there of five with two runs and three RBIs while Sailer went one of two with one run and one RBI. Daye was one of four with two RBIs.
Menominee beats Bark River
Taking on Bark River on their home diamond the Menominee Red Wave left the field with a 14-3 win.
Jason Janquardt took the mound win for Menominee giving up three hits, walking one and striking out three.
Marinette's Offense Shines in Bay Port
In Fox River Valley Legion League action Tuesday night, Marinette traveled to take on Bay Port. Marinette made sure to bring a heavy dose of offense as they pounded out 14 runs, on their way to a 14-9 victory.
Nick Sailer continued to be a terror in some of his first games back as he beat out an infield single. James Jagielski singled and stole second and Adam Wahl on an RBI single. Matt Osterberg ripped another RBI single and later scored in the inning to give Marinette a 3-0 lead.
Marinette added four runs in their half of the second inning. Matt Eldredge reached safely on a fielder's choice. Spencer Hipke's single allowed Eldredge to reach home plate. Sailer drew a walk and Wahl recorded an RBI sacrifice fly. Osterberg hit for his second RBI single, pushing the lead to 7-0.
Bay Port added three runs over the next two innings, but Marinette put together another big inning in the fifth. Singles from Eldredge, Hipke and Jagielski and a walk from Austin Marquardt started the inning for Marinette. Trey Bretl laced an RBI single and Riley Reif was plunked to score another run. Wild pitches allowed two more Marinette players to score and the run total in the fifth inning was four.
Three more runs came across in the sixth for Marinette. Hipke drilled a leadoff double and scored on Kevin Charlesworth's single. Charlesworth was plated on a triple off the bat of Jagielski. Marquardt returned the favor to Jagielski, scoring him on a single.
Tommy Sawinski earned the win on the mound for Marinette with three and a third innings, giving up two runs (one earned) on four hits, three walks and three strikeouts. Spencer Hipke led the red-hot Marinette offense with a 4-for-5 performance, James Jagielski added a 3-for-5 day and Matt Osterberg went 2-for-2.
