Oconto County Fair at Gillett Aug. 27-30

The 2017 Oconto County Fair runs Aug. 27-20 in Gillett.

Bad Habitz, an Oshkosh based 3-piece band whose repertoire is heavily influenced by 80's rock music will perform Friday night, Aug. 18 at the Oconto County Fair.  The band, started as a family project has performed throughout the Fox Valley and surrounding areas since 2011.  Their hard work and talent earned them a WAMI Rising Star Award in 2014.  Bad Habitz performs Friday night, Aug. 18 at 8 p.m. in a free concert at the Fair.  There is no admission charge to the Fair.

A new and upcoming alternative rock cover band with ties to Oconto County will perform on opening night of the Fair.  Experience Baggage on the Runway is Thursday evening, Aug. 17 at 7 p.m.

The popular Casady's Critters exotic animal petting zoo will be back at the Oconto County Fair.  Animal lovers can get up close to camels, llamas and other exotic and domestic animals at this attraction every day of the Fair.

A big attraction at the County Fair for kids young and old is the carnival rides.  Spectrum Entertainment, the carnival serving the Oconto County Fair is offering ride specials that make this fair-favorite attraction more affordable again this year.

Discount advance sale coupons for wristband ride specials are available at local businesses through Monday, Aug. 14.  Advance coupons cost $15 and are exchanged for a wristband good for four hours of unlimited rides at the Fair.  The cost of wristbands purchased at the Fair is $25.  Ride specials are available every day of the Fair and the advance coupons can be used any day and are good on all rides.  Wristband special times are 6 to10 p.m. Thursday, 1 to 5 p.m. and 6 to 10 p.m. both Friday and Saturday, and 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday.

Purchase advance sale ride special coupons at Oconto County businesses before Monday, Aug. 14 are at Witt's Piggly Wiggly-Oconto Falls, Peshtigo National Bank-Oconto Falls & Gillett,  Pat's Market-Gillett,  NEW Credit Union-Oconto Falls Oconto & Suring, Wagner Shell-Oconto, and Wickman's BP, Suring.

Space and time limitations prevent scheduling all animal judging shows in the Thursday through Sunday Fair weekend.  So the horse show; small pet exhibits, which encompass everything from caged birds to pet rodents, reptiles and amphibians; cats; and the dog obedience trials are held the weekend before the main Fair.

The public is invited and encouraged to visit these shows for interesting, entertaining, and educational events with no distractions in a less hectic environment. Enjoy talented youth exhibitors of less traditional animal projects demonstrate the knowledge and skills they have gained through their projects.

The horse show begins at 9:30 am Saturday, Aug. 12.  Sunday activities begin with the small pet show at 8:30 am, followed by the cat show at 9:30 am and dog obedience trials at noon. These activities will take place at the Fairgrounds. Concession service for snacks and lunch is being provided by the Pasture Pirates 4-H Club both days.

The Oconto County Fair provides numerous opportunities for county residents of all ages to engage in the Fair beyond viewing exhibits and riding rides.

Youngsters ages 5 through 19 can enter a cake in the Youth Decorated Cake Auction that is held Saturday afternoon of the Fair.  Creatively decorated cakes are brought in Saturday morning and are auctioned to the highest bidder beginning at 1 pm with proceeds going to the creator of the cake.

All are invited to enter the Oconto County Ultimate Grilled Cheese Contest.  Grilled cheese aficionados prepare their entries in youth and adult divisions and basic or creative grilled cheese categories to be named the Ultimate Grilled Cheese Sandwich.  Prizes are awarded and the audience gets to taste the results.

Youngsters too young to participate in animal shows are afforded the opportunity to try out showing in most of the barns.  Kiddie showmanship activities are hosted by goat, poultry and rabbit superintendents and exhibitors following their shows for any children who wish to give it a try.  Dairy and beef calf kiddie showmanship will be at 10 a.m. Sunday morning in the cattle show ring.

The Fair wraps up with a fun and challenging Ag Olympics competition.  This team event in three age categories from junior through adult will have members demonstrate speed and skill in age-related challenges for prizes and glory.

Saturday night free music at the Oconto County Fair will feature Cat 5. This group features four lead vocalists and more instruments that you can shake a tail at. They cover favorites from today to classic rock and country.
