Ellen (Banta) LaHaye of Menominee, Mi., passed away Tuesday, Aug. 8, 2017 Born Nov. 3, 1929 in Two Rivers, to the late Marie and John Banta, she grew up on the Petersen family farm in Denmark and graduated from Denmark High School in 1947 and served as class president. She married Don LaHaye on Feb. 16, 1952 in Green Bay and he preceded her in death in December 2000.
They started their family in Green Bay and in 1958, moved to Menominee.
Her greatest joy in life was her large, loving family. With five children attending school at the same time, she served as President of Washington Elementary PTA which became a long career with Menominee Public Schools, where she retired as Purchasing Agent.
Active with First Presbyterian Church, she served both on the Session and as a Deacon, the Michigan Association of Retired School Personnel and the Menominee Elks and Lady Elks Club.
She enjoyed staying current on local events, dancing, traveling, boating, gardening and sitting in the sun, but mostly time with family. She also enjoyed the Waterfront Festival, other local social activities, especially when her children were in town and was an avid forwarder of Emails.
She is survived by six children, Tom (Ann) LaHaye, Judith (James) Harteau, Barb (Scott Sommerfeldt) LaHaye, Jeff (Donna) LaHaye, Kathy (Pete) Anderson and Mike (Lori LaVoie) LaHaye; 15 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; many cousins in the Petersen family who were like siblings and a brother-in-law, Lee LaHaye and his children, and their families.
Visitation was held at First Presbyterian Church in Menominee on Saturday, Aug. 12 from 10 a.m. until time of the funeral services at noon, followed by a luncheon. A graveside ceremony for family was held at Riverside Cemetery. A memorial fund has been established for seating in her memory along the new lighthouse walkway. Contributions can be made to a family member via Cadieu Thielen Funeral Home in Menominee, whom assisted the family.
