William L. Popp
William (Bill) L. Popp, 90, of Townsend, passed away Saturday, Aug. 12, 2017 at Eastview Nursing Home in Antigo.
Born Oct. 5, 1926 in Appleton, to Elmer and Holdina (Hahn) Popp, he graduated from Hilbert High School in 1944 and married Lucille Pagel on June 6, 1953 in Gillett. He served in the United States Army in Germany.
He owned and operated Popp's Sunset Resort in 1956, retiring in 1981. A supervisor on the Oconto County Board for 30 years, he also belonged to the American Legion in Wabeno, was a charter member of the McCaslin Lions, served many positions, including singing in the choir, at St. John Lutheran Church in Townsend.
Surviving are his wife of 64 years, Lucille; three daughters, Nancy (Frank) Erler, Townsend, Sandy (special friend, Gary Stauffer) Popp, Green Bay and Diane (Tom) Ashbeck, Wabeno; two sons, Richard (Betsy) Popp, Townsend and Duane (Diana) Popp, Green Bay; 11 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Elaine (Leonard) Behnke and a brother, Elmer (Lois) Popp.
Visitation will be held at St. John Lutheran Church in Townsend on Wednesday, Aug. 16 from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Visitation will continue at the church on Thursday, Aug. 17 from 10 a.m. until time of service, with Pastor Stephen Mueller officiating. Burial will follow in Forest Home Cemetery. Weber Hill Funeral Home of Crandon is assisting the family with arrangements.
