Letter to Editor:
Aquila Resources, Inc. represented by their newly hired Public Relations Director and State of Wisconsin Lobbyist, Chantae Lessard, to represent them in the repeal of the Wisconsin's mining moratorium, HB395 presented a viewpoint of their on Channel 5 Sunday morning, Aug. 27, at 7:30 a.m. in an interview intended to inform the public on the value of having a mine less than 150 feet from the Menominee River that will produce 240 new jobs (150 discussed previously).
She did not refer to the fact the mine intending to be 2,100 feet in diameter, encompassing 575 acres, less than 2.500 feet from Shaky Lakes up to 1,250 feet deep will displace the Shaky Lakes Recreational Area in Menominee County for as long as the mine is in operation and minerals are processed on site, estimated to be at least the next 15-20 years, eliminate thousands of years of archaeological history of the Menominee Indian Tribe forever, including garden mounds, burial sites, dance rings and other historical sites left behind when you Government moved them to a reservation 65 miles southwest.
Also, she did not mention an extremely toxic and dangerous "tailings pond' will be left behind with lots of problems mankind will never solve! Imagine a 100-250 acre hole in the ground from 100 to 125 feet deep that will be filled with rocks, slurry of mud, sulfuric acid layered between crushed rock unwanted minerals of lead, arsenic, cyanide and other deadly chemicals too dangerous for contact with humans, animals and any other form of vegetable life to exist. There will never be enough money to ever correct this kind of toxic waste and will remain there forever as has been done throughout man's history by previous mining generations throughout the world for the last several thousands of years. This is a problem modern day engineering has never or will ever be able to solve. So, when you're told "trust me' modern technology will make you safer - don't fall for that line - ask for proof!
This historical area was referred to by Ms. Lessard as "a couple of garden mounds". A little research would have told her a lot more than she was willing to talk about! She did, however, give the public some "brand new' information; by advising her viewers the river would have to rise nearly 30 feet over its present level to become a threat to Marinette and Menominee. This means water must run up a 125-foot hill since the elevation at the mine site if 689 feet above sea level and Menominee is at an elevation of 594 feet above sea level. All of the water north of Menominee flows thru rivers, streams, wet lands and aquifers eventually into the Great Lakes to the oceans. Maybe modern mining technology has solved the problem of water running downhill?
What does the flag represent?
That I believe this is a personal and very individual decision. If it represents the American ideals of justice, liberty, and respect for all Americans, we don't seem to have fully accomplished that. If it represents the rights and privileges embodied in the Constitution, we as a nation have not achieved that goal either. If it only represents our fallen warriors then we should stand in honor of them. It is clear that white Caucasians are much closer to having obtained the values and privileges of the Constitution and the American ideals than other minority groups. If it represents good uncorrupted governance, the present administration clearly has a long way to go.
Our country was based on resistance to the injustice of British rule. I believe the right and responsibility to object in non-violent means is inherent in our country's values and important for this country's movement forward. It seems to me that the American ideals and Constitutional rights should be realized by all racial and ethnic groups in all areas of this country. Dissent always requires some measure of courage and risk. In this case the dissent involves the militarization and fear that many people in urban and rural black and Hispanic communities live under.
In my opinion, name calling, disrespecting gold star families, and mocking legitimate respectful dissent over or shortcomings is disrespectful to the flag and all those who died for this country.
1249 Garfield St.,
Here's to the five Menominee alderpersons sitting on the Menominee City Council misrepresenting those that elected them to the office they hold by supporting War 2 Alderman Bill Plemel's motion to not allow discussion on the Back Forty Mine at the recent Menominee City Council meeting.
This is also a thank you to the three council members who favored allowing the discussion.
In my opinion, it's clear a conspiracy does exist at Menominee's City Hall in Menominee City government. The influence of a "paid' informant/lobbyist for the mining industry invaded the Menominee City and County governments years ago when the City and County voted to support one person and then later, additional financial support was added on behalf of the mining industry from Aquila Resources, Inc.
The Menominee Business Development Corporation, called MEDC or Menominee Development Corporation incorrectly by Mr. Plemel was licensed by the State of Michigan on April 1, 2004 to further the interests of "existing local' business and thereafter received designation as a 501(c3) Corporation to permit tax deductible contributions to be made by donors that provided financial support.
No place in its charter is included as you state, "to help with the economic development of the mine". I don't believe, at that time, much was known about mining and minerals processing or Aquila Resources, Inc. Only later were we exposed and made award of high risks of destroying "tourism at the Shaky Lakes Recreational Area, providing an extremely risky exposure of polluting the Menominee River, our drinking water, destroying our sport fishing industry "definitely' leaving behind an extremely toxic waste hazardous tailings pond and a "filled in' 85 acre, 1250 feet deep hole that will continue to seep sulfuric acid drainage forever. These are just some of the problems modern engineering technology and the rest of mankind will never solve. Look it up " copper mines abandoned 2000 years ago are still actively seeping acid rock drainage. Also, please look up past costly pollution problems in the local Menominee/Marinette area during your lifetime.
When the Menominee Business Development Corporation (MBDC) was established, it became an excellent method of providing a handsome secret non accountable salary and expense accounts for its only employee, a former Chamber of Commerce Director, to oversee business development for the County and City of Menominee. Average income for 2015, 2014 and 2013 of the Menominee Business Development Company was $57,244 of which the County and City of Menominee paid $40,000 annually and the balance of $17,244 was received from other area businesses or "want to be' businesses of which Aquila Resources, Inc. was the largest contributor.
Your comment about being given "half-truths' is absolutely correct Mr. Plemel. We can't wait for problems to happen, especially if the risks are so great. Your job and the rest of the Menominee City Council is to represent others; not favor 40 year old friendships to the determent of your entire community.

We have been keeping up with the proposed tax reform bill about to be presented to congress. Unbelievable that the democrats continue to block this bill for fear that our country might move forward. But it's okay for Hilary Clinton to see our Uranium down the road tot he Russians.
We tossed this subject around in our sunroom and came up with a solution that wouldn't divide our country and everyone would be happy. The plan would involve the following:
If you're a Republican, you'll go forward with the new tax plan with getting a raise, businesses can prosper and more jobs can be created. And, at tax time, you'll fill out the Republican tax form. And, you'll identify this with your employer so you'll receive a proper tax deductions.
If you're a Democrat, you'll "keep your same plan and your same tax accountant" to quote Obama and identify this with your employer so you can maintain the same benefits and tax deductions along with the length tax form.
This would be something similar to the sanctuary cities which are controlled by the democrats that house the high crime rates and the cities that are controlled by the Republicans with the low crime rates.
Under this plan, everybody would get their wishes.

The Haunted Farmhouse
(Inspired by my brother, Roger, and an old farmhouse along Hwy. 180)
We passed by an old abandoned farmhouse one day,
My brother and I
He said, "It is haunted."
I long to know the reason why
What story do the old walls hide?
Did the children whisper in the dark, did they dream -
Did they play hide-and-seek in the moonlight?
Did Ma and Pa work hard, caring for their family with a quiet love
Perhaps pondering an old dream?
Did the old folk gather "round the table and reminisce of days gone by?
Did they celebrate life's joys, mourn it's sorrows?
Did they quarrel and make up?
Did they laugh, did they cry?
Did they live...and did they die?
Now every time I pass by that old farmhouse
I say to myself - my brother is right
It IS haunted
By the ghost of memories of a time long ago.
