Area Grapplers Take to the Mats

Coleman Wins Two, Gillett/Suring Falls to Host Bonduel

Coleman defeated Wittenberg-Birnamwood and Bonduel by scores of 64-16 and 44-31, Tuesday, Dec. 5, losing just two live matches against W-B.

Winning by forfeit for the Cougars were 2017 113-pound state champion Caleb Gross (120), Tyler Blanchard (160), Shamus McLain (170) and Spencer Karban (220).

2017 106-pound champion Koltin Grzybowski, now wrestling at 113, pinned Chad Moegenburg in 2:21, Logan Liptak won a 13-1 major decision for Coleman, Sam Kuchta got a four-minute pin at 132 over Larken Betry, 2017 state qualifier Jake Baldwin pinned Zach Johnson in 2:44, Bryce Karban got a pin in 3:01 over Jeremy Landowski and Jonathon Bieber pinned Wyatt Schoepke in 3:01.

Wittenberg-Birnamwood got wins from Dakotah Olson at 106 via forfeit, Will Urquhart (138) with a major decision over Jaydon Zeitler, 10-1 and Wesley Johnson, who won in 27 seconds over cougar Jaydon Scott.

Against Bonduel, Grzybowski won an 18-3 major decision over Max Sokolski, Gross got a pin in 1:14, Liptak won 6-1, Scott pinned Jakob Froeming in 27 seconds, Baldwin pinned Moises Lagunes De La Cruz in 1:20, Karban got a 1:25 pin over Alex Schill, McLain got a 3:22 pin over Kaden Bergsbaken, and Brock Martinson got a 285-pound pin in 1:41.

For Bonduel, Jordan Boldt won a major decision over Kuchta at 138 and Jacob Giese took an 8-7 decision at 220. The Bears also got forfeit victories at 106, 182 and 195.

Bonduel defeated Gillett/Suring on the night, 57-15. Gillett Suring's Sam Lemens (145) pinned Chris Salerno in 1:26, Sam Davis (152) defeated Lagunes De La Cruz, 5-1 and Reid Winkler pinned Kaden Bergsbaken in 2:14.

Bonduel got forfeit wins from Luis Lagunes (106) and Sokolski (113). Jayson Toellner beat Andy Lemens 4-2, Froeming pinned Colton Wolfe in 1:24, Boldt (138) pinned Nate Davis in 59 seconds, Isaac Banker pinned Brice Winkler in 3:57, Jacob Banker (182) pinned Tyler Lockstein in 3:02, Jacob Giese pinned Bo Krueger at 195 in 3:25 and Colin Wussow pinned Jacob Burt in 37 seconds at the 285 class. The 220-pound class was a double forfeit.



Bulldogs Wauters, Rauch, Brissette go Undefeated in Seymour

In Seymour, three Bulldogs won their respective weight classes. Wauters won the invitational for the fourth time, getting pins vs. Mishicot and Bonduel wrestlers in 1:09 and 2:13, respectively, while getting a win against a Seymour wrestler, 9-3, and taking forfeits against Wausau West and Waupun.

Rauch pinned wrestlers from Mishicot, Seymour, Bonduel and Waupun, all in under four minutes, while Wausau East forfeited.

Brissette pinned his opponents from Mishicot, Bonduel and Wausau West, all under three minutes. Seymour and Waupun forfeited against Brissette.

Schaut went 3-2 to take third in his weight class.

Nick Parrett and Riley Plosczynski each finished the day with a 1-4 mark.



Marines Sink Bulldogs in Non-Conference Match-Up

The Peshtigo Bulldogs wrestling team dropped a tough 45-36 score to the Marinette Marines on Thursday, Nov. 30, though the Bulldogs won three of the five actual matches.

The Marines got forfeit victories from Chase Weishaar (106), London Brown (126), Devin Shedlock (145), Joe Swiatnicki (160), Sam Drees (170) and Sean Holk (182).

Peshtigo wrestlers Zack Wauters (113), Riley Plosczynski (220) and Gavin Brissette (285) each won by forfeit.

As for live matches, Marinette's Alec Queever (120) defeated Kyle Rivet 8-4 and Sam Gressel (132) pinned Bulldog Nick Parrett in 5:14.

Peshtigo's three victories came via the pin. John Schaut (138) pinned Josh Goslyn in 5:58, Max Rauch (152) pinned Sam McClain in 2:53 and Ian Cortez defeated Dillon Hill in 2:25.

Before the match, Marinette honored former coach Al Peterson, who coached 29 seasons in purple until 2008. Peterson currently assists in Peshtigo to Head Coach Warren Howard.



Marinette Wrestlers Top Field in Crivitz

The Wolverines also hosted a five-team invitational Saturday, Dec. 2, with Florence/Niagara, Three Lakes/Phelps, Oshkosh West and Marinette in attendance. Marinette went 4-0 and won the event, beating all four teams in attendance.

The Marines beat Florence/Niagara 60-6 to start the day, defeated Three Lakes/Phelps 51-19 and bested Crivitz 60-11. None of Marinette's first three opponents had a full team, leaving Marinette with significant points from forfeit victories.

In Marinette's final matchup, they defeated Division I opponent Oshkosh West 42-30.

The Wolverines went 1-3 after a 24-18 win over Florence/Niagara and losses to Three Lakes/Phelps, Oshkosh West and Marinette.



Crivitz Drops Bout With Wabeno/Laona

Wabeno/Laona defeated Crivitz on the mats Thursday, Nov. 30 by a score of 30-6 in a competition with only three head-to-head matchups.

At 145, Wabeno/Laona's Tanner Dorner pinned Tony Jopek in 4:50, while Derek Moravec gave Wabeno/Laona a pin in 2:20 over Michael Retza at 152. Dylan Houts (220) pinned Wolverine Joseph Thomaszewski in 3:21 as well, while Brenden Dorner (138) and Jackson Smith (132) both won by forfeit.

Crivitz got its only win at 170 courtesy of a Jaden Bemis forfeit victory. The 106, 113, 120, 126, 160, 182, 195 and 285 pound classes were double forfeits.



Lena/STAA Wrestlers Slip Past Elcho

Lena/St. Thomas Aquinas Academy was defeated by Elcho by a score of 24-18 on the wrestling mats, with just four actual matches occurring.

Lena/STA got its lone live win from Alex Skrobel, who pinned Pete McCabe in 1:54 at 152. Kevin Chang (120) and Alex Decoursin (126) won by forfeit for Lena/STAA.

For Elcho, Everett Wagner won by forfeit (195), while Collin Smith pinned Noah Chang at 138 in 1:33, Brock Smith (160) pinned Brian Ermis in 3:13 and Jacob Eighmy (285) pinned Richard Fleck (285).



Lemens Leads Area Wrestlers in Little Chute

Gillett/Suring and Lena/St. Thomas Aquinas Academy competed at the Sgt. Nick Mueller Memorial Tournament in Little Chute on Saturday, Dec. 2.

For Gillett/Suring, Sam Lemens was the top finisher, taking second at 145. He Won his first two matches by pin over wrestlers from Appleton West and West De Pere, but was pinned by Wrightstown's Walker VendeHey in the championship match.

Sam Davis (152) took third, opening with a pin and bye, then winning by major decision over Weyauwega-Fremont's Logan Kicherer in the final match. His one loss was a five-minute pin against Freedom's Ivan Coenen.

Brice Winkler took fourth at 160. He went 1-2 with a pin over Omro's Ben Stone. Andy Lemens (120) took fifth with a 3-1 record, winning with a bye, forfeit and pin over Lena/STAA's Kevin Chang. Bo Krueger went sixth with a 2-2 record, including a bye, to take sixth at 195 and Colton Wolfe did not place, going 0-2.

For Lena/STAA, Alex DeCoursin (126) and Noah Chang (132) each took fourth. DeCoursin went 1-2 with a pin in 2:05 over Joseph Becher's Tri-County. Noah Chang was 1-2 with a 1:01 pin over Xavier's Will Wanty. Brian Ermis (160) took sixth with a 2-2 record, including a decision and bye win. Richard Fleck (285) and Alex Skrobel (152) did not place. Both were 0-2.

Gillett/Suring was tied for seventh of 13 teams, while Lena/STAA was 12th. Wrightstown, West De Pere and Little Chute were the top three teams at the tournament.

Cougars Claim Silver

at Red Raider Duals

The Coleman Cougar wrestling squad competed at the Red Raider Duals in Pulaski, going 4-1 in team duals and taking second in the field.

The Cougars started off with a win over Mosinee, 71-6. Kasey Casper (113), John Bieber (182), Spencer Karban (220) and Brock Martinson (285) each won by forfeit.

Koltin Grzybowski won by 20-3 technical fall, Caleb Gross (120) pinned his opponent in 48 seconds, Logan Liptak (126) got a 15-second pin, Sam Kuchta (132) pinned his man in 2:28, Jake Baldwin (145) got a 46-second pin, Bryce Karban (152) pinned his opponent in 59 seconds, Tyler Blanchard (160) got a pin in 1:02 and Shamus McLain earned a pin in 5:05. Mosinee's line win came by forfeit at 195. 138 was a double forfeit.

In the team's second dual, they were tested by Hortonville and ended up winning 46-27. Grzybowski pinned his man in 1:14, Casper got a 27-second pin, Gross took 2:33 to get a pin, Kuchta got a pin in 1:24, Baldwin earned a pin in 50 seconds and Brock Martinson took 1:12 to get his pin. Bryce Karban won by 7-3 decision, McLain took a 12-0 major decision and Bieber won a tight 7-6 decision.

For Hortonville, Eric Barnett and Josh Werner won forfeit at 120 and 195, Jacob Collar pinned Liptak in 2:34 at 132, Colin Schuler beat Blanchard 7-6, and Brady Buchman pinned Spencer Karban in 4:42.

Coleman suffered a loss to Freedom in the third match of the competition. The Cougars got a forfeit win from Grzybowski, a pin victory from Gross in 3:27, a 5:02 pin from Kuchta, and decision wins from Baldwin and Martinson, but they fell to Freedom, who got three forfeit victories en route to a 45-24 win.

For the victors, Carsten McHugh pinned Casper in 31 seconds, Koy Murphy was uncontested at 132, Sam Peters took an 11-7 decision over Bryce Karban, Evan Vosters won by forfeit, Dakota Brockman beat McLain at 170 in a 7-2 decision, Brody Brozewski took a 10-8 win over John Bieber, Adam Brueckner was a forfeit winner and Matt Verhasselt pinned Spencer Karban in 59 seconds.

Coleman bounced back as a team to defeat Rhinelander in the team's fourth match. Grzybowski got a 29-second pin, Gross won a 9-1 major decision, Liptak, Kuchta and McLain were unopposed, Baldwin won by 14-2 major decision, Blanchard took a 13-8 win and Martinson won by pin with 37 seconds to go in the match. The 113-pound class was a double forfeit.

Rhinelander got wins from Tyler Olson via forfeit at 126, Jacob DeMeyer with a 3-0 decision over Bryce Karban, Scott Fox with a pin of John Bieber, Hunter Greyhair with a forfeit at 195 and Alec Kurtz with a pin of Spencer Karban.

The Cougars finished off their work with a 42-30 team victory over Two Rivers. Grzybowski ended his strong day with a forfeit win, Gross capped off an undefeated day with a 4-2 decision, Baldwin and Blanchard had forfeit wins, Bryce Karban rebounded with a pin in 52 seconds, McLain ended up with a 5-3 win by decision, Bieber took control for a 45-second pin and Spencer Karban pinned his man in 4:34.

For Two Rivers, Cody Holmes pinned Liptak, Joey Bianchi won by forfeit, Bailey Thelen pinned Sam Kuchta and Damien Bullock won by injury default against Brock Martinson. The 195 class was a double forfeit.



Oconto Hosts 6 Team Invite

Oconto hosted Crandon, Shawano, Schiocton, Tomahawk and Laoana/Wabeno at its home invitational over the weekend.

For the Blue Devils, Isaac Diaz won the 195-pound weight class. He began with a pin before taking a major decision, a 6-3 decision over Crandon's Dylan Bukovic and finishing with a bye and forfeit victory.

Lucas Ruechel took second in 285, pinning opponents from Tomahawk and Shawano in 1:15 and 1:11, respectively, but losing by pin to Shiocton's Ben Gunderson. He also received two byes.

Tyler Lipp (220) and Troy Wenzel (170) each took fourth. Wenzel went 2-3 including a bye, while Lipp went 2-3 with two byes for his wins.

For Laona/Wabeno, Brenden Dorner won the 138-pound class and Dylan Houts (220) won his class. Houts pinned two opponents and won a major decision, along with receiving two byes, while Dorner took a 3-2 decision over Shawano's Ben Carroll to start the day before taking a bye and finishing with three byes, none of which took more than 1:19.

Derek Moravec took second at 152 for Laona/Wabeno. He went 4-1 with a bye victory and a forfeit win, taking his only loss in the third round after a 3:54 pin by Tomahawk's Wyatt Wenninger.

Jackson Smith (132) took fourth, starting with an 18-8 major decision and also taking a bye, finishing at 2-3.
