Legion Auxiliary, Silver Cliff to Offer $1,000 Scholarships

The Athelstane/Silver Cliff American Legion Auxiliary Unit 66 met on Saturday, Jan. 6 at the Silver Cliff Town Hall. The meeting was called to order by President Dee Farley. All officers were present. Treasurer Priscilla Maeder and Secretary Mary Deprey gave their respective reports which were accepted as read. The treasurer's report was put on file for audit. The 2018 Budget was discussed and accepted as presented. The 2018 Membership as of today is 44.
Communications were read from the 9th District Newsletter and the Department of Wisconsin. Election of Ninth District Officers will be held at the Spring Conference on April 28 at Oconto Falls High School. Any eligible ALA Member wishing to pursue a 9th District Office should contact Dee Farley or Past District President Mary Krutz. Their contact information can be found in the Red Book.
At this time, Unit 66 has not received any information about potential 2018 Badger Girls. The Unit may sponsor other Badger Girls/Boys from the Marinette County area as well. The 2018 Scholarship applications have been sent to local schools for eligible seniors. Unit 66 will be offering (2) $1000 scholarships again this year with money raised at the 2017 Chili Fest.
The 2018 Annual reports are due on April 1 and are in the process of being put together. Any member who has community service hours or In-Kind Donations to report should contact Unit 66 Member Ann Wender.
Unit 66 has received a Wish List of items needed for the patients at the Iron Mountain VA Medical Facility and will be putting together a Goodie Box for the facility in the next few months. Items to be collected can be toiletries, lap afghans or blankets, playing cards, shirts, cath bags, gift cards, children's books, colors, etc. All donations can be brought to our regular meeting or given to another member to bring in for you.
Post 66 Member Mike Zindar is looking into information about potential Old Glory Honor Flights for families who have been affected by Agent Orange through a Viet Nam Memorial Fund. Two names of Wisconsin Veterans who have died as a result of injuries directly related to the Viet Nam War have been recently added to the iconic Viet Nam Wall.
On Saturday, Jan. 20, the Marinette County Council will meet at the Silver Cliff Town Hall at 1 PM. The meeting place has been temporarily moved to accommodate the recent sale of the Wausaukee Post/Unit 150 Clubhouse. All Unit 66 members are encouraged to attend as well as other Marinette County ALA Unit members. The next regular meeting of Unit 66 will be at 10 AM on Saturday, Mar. 3 at the Silver Cliff Town Hall.
