THE CITY REBORN FROM THE ASHES OF AMERICA'S MOST DISASTROUS FOREST FIRE
Gary Smith, 65, of Iron River, Mi., formerly of Marinette, passed away Jan. 24, 2018 in Costa Rica.
Born April 11, 1952 in Fort Dodge, Ia., to the late Charles Smith and Patricia O'Brien, his family later moved to Wisconsin where he graduated from Suring High School in June of 1970. He served in the Military from 1972-1983. He worked at Angeli's Central Market for 25 years, first as a butcher and then worked his way to store director.
He enjoyed hunting, fishing, watching football, spending time with his grandchildren and traveling to Costa Rica.
He is survived by two sons, Kyle (Haley) Smith and Mike Smith; a daughter, Cassie (Brad) Barstow; his ex-wife, Amber Roetzer; four grandchildren with a granddaughter on the way; his step-father, Michael (Linda) O'Brien; six siblings, Wendy (Gary) DeHart, Debra (Earl) Budd, Jeff (Jean) Smith, Rick Smith (Cheryl), Clay (Chrissy) Smith and Patrick (Jenifer) O'Brien; two step-siblings, Shawn O'Brien and Kelly McDonald and many nieces and nephews.
A hardworking, generous, humble and a purveyor of obscure nicknames, he was a loving father, brother and friend. His children appreciate the help of Fred and Beth Angeli and Don and Carol Bastianello.
Visitation will be held at Jacobs Funeral Home at 405 West Cayuga Street in Iron River on Saturday, Feb. 3 from 9 a.m. to noon.
