Bay Area Youth Rugby Expanding
Issue Date: February 7, 2018
After creating rugby opportunities for over 300 boys and girls between 1997 and 2017, The Bay Area Barbarians High School Boys Rugby team saw an opportunity to expand their educational mission, and align with statewide efforts in Wisconsin in 2018. The youth rugby program renamed itself "Bay Area Rugby" and plans to add High School Girls 7-on-7 rugby as well as 7th & 8th Grade rugby, to their menu of player options this coming spring, which will also include High School Boys 15-on-15.
"Any athlete that wants to compete in a sport that creates equal chances for every player to contribute on offense and defense...to compete simultaneously as individuals and as a part of team would benefit from trying rugby. The sport gives young people a chance to try something new, and the athlete that can do that is showing real guts. No one learns how to be a leader without stepping outside of their comfort zone first." said Dave Hendrick, Bay Area Rugby Coach and Board Secretary for the North East Wisconsin Youth Rugby League.
"The fact is, girls played for the Bay Area Barbarians, successfully, alongside and against boys, for most of our first 20 years, until USA Rugby changed the policy so girls could no longer compete against boys. The result was a surge of High School Girls teams across the country. Well, why can't we have one here? We are looking for girls who want to take on the challenge, learn to tackle, and add something new to their lives. And we know there are young women in our community looking for opportunities to coach as well. We want to hear from all of them. Same goes for 7th and 8th grade boys!" added Hendrick.
Wisconsin is currently a hotbed of rugby success, especially at the collegiate levels. University of Wisconsin-Whitewater men's and Stevens Point men's and women's sides have all advanced in national competition, with Whitewater winning the Division II National Championship in 2016 and 2017.
Bay Area Rugby will be having a Players & Parents Meeting on Tuesday, February 20th at Domes Lanes in Marinette from 6:00 - 7:00, with practices start March 19th. Those interested in learning more about the sport, practices, and matches should contact Dave Hendrick at 715 587 4541,
