Benjamin J. Johnson, 18, of Norway, Mi., passed away Tuesday, Feb. 20, 2018 in Sands Township, Mi., as a result of injuries sustained in a car accident.
Born July 22, 1999 in Racine, to Angela Polston and James Johnson, he attended Pembine school until 11th grade when he transferred to Norway High School, graduating from there in 2017.
He loved hockey since age 5 and was a member of the Dickinson Area Hockey Association (DAHA). In 2006 he became a member of the Green Bay Jr. Gamblers travel hockey team until 2015 when he joined the Marquette Electricians travel hockey team. He then played for the Kingsford High School hockey team in 2016-2017.
He excelled in football, playing for the Predators, played baseball for the Pembine Patriots and was an active soccer player for SAY for over 10 years.
He enjoyed fishing, especially ice fishing and his dogs, but had a special love for his family. He was known as Big Ben, a gentle giant, who was kind-hearted.
Survivors include his parents, Angela Polston, Norway, Mi. and James Johnson, Pembine; his paternal grandfather, James Johnson Pembine; his maternal grandmother, Linda Sommerfeldt, Fall Creek; two sisters, Rachelle Johnson, Madison and Gabrielle Johnson, attending school in Greece and many aunts; uncles and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his grandmother, Sharon Johnson of Pembine; his grandfather, Harvey Sommerfeldt of Fall Creek and grandfather, Wallace Polston of Union Grove.
Visitation was held at Jacobs Funeral Home in Iron Mountain, Mi. on Saturday, Feb. 24 from 10 a.m. until time of the funeral services at 1 p.m., with Pastor Chris Metras officiating.
