Ruth O. Behnke, 97, of Oconto Falls, passed away Tuesday afternoon, Feb. 20, 2018.
Born in the Town of Stiles, to Ole and May (Erickson) Fredrickson, she grew up on the family farm and graduated from Lena High School in 1938. She then earned a teaching certificate from Marinette County Normal in 1942 and a bachelors degree in elementary education at UW-Oshkosh in 1966. She taught school for 31 years, first in rural schools, then Lena Grade School and Jefferson Elementary in Oconto Falls, retiring in 1986.
On Aug. 23, 1947, she married Lloyd Behnke and they lived in Oconto Falls. Along with her husband, they enjoyed camping and traveling the United States, Norway and Canada. She also enjoyed quilting, growing things and was an avid gardener.
A longtime member of Grace Lutheran Church, she served as past superintendent and teacher of Sunday School, Vacation Bible School coordinator and officer of the WELCA (Women's Bible Study) She also was officer of the Retired Teachers Association, NORTA, AARP and the Oconto Falls Women's Club and was active in the Community Memorial Hospital Auxiliary, the Friends of the Library and Friends of the Arts in Oconto Falls.
Survivors include two daughters, Barbara (Thomas) Herald, Green Bay and Donna (Willie) Fabry, Oconto Falls; nine grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; brother-in-law and sisters-in-law, Floyd (Charmaine) Behnke, Lena and Shirley Fredrickson, Plymouth and nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 69 years, Lloyd on Sept. 24, 2016; two sisters, Ethel (Robert) Christopherson and Anne (John) McClure and a brother, Alan Fredrickson.
Visitation will be held at Grace Lutheran Church in Oconto Falls on Thursday, March 1 from 9 a.m. until time of the funeral services at 11 a.m. Pastor Gary R. Olson will officiate with burial in Woodlawn Cemetery in Oconto Falls.
