Rodney R. "Rod" Shafer, 83, of Pembine, passed away Monday, March 19, 2018 with family by his side at Dickinson County Healthcare System in Iron Mountain, Mi.
Born July 1, 1934, in Niagara, to the late Joseph and Captola (Bouche) Shafer, he graduated from Pembine High School in 1952. He married Shirley Groleski on Oct. 23, 1954 in Goodman. He worked at the Niagara Paper Mill and owned and operated Shafer Electric until recently.
He enjoyed hunting, fishing, golfing and spending time with his children and grandchildren. A member of St. Margaret Catholic Church in Pembine, he was a founding member of the Pembine Rescue Squad and the Pembine Volunteer Fire Department.
Survivors include his loving wife of 63 years, Shirley; a son, John Shafer, Pembine; two daughters, Jean Krenn, Pembine and Mary (Kenny) Thompson, Florida; a brother, Joe Shafer, Pembine; a sister, Susan (Richard) Potthier, Green Bay; five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Richard Shafer in 2016; a grandson, Jon Thomas Sederstrom and a great-granddaughter, Audrey Theuerkauf.
Visitation will be held at St. Margaret Church in Pembine on Friday, March 23 from 9:30 a.m. until time of a Memorial Mass at 11 a.m., with Rev. Fr. Matt Settle officiating. Burial will take place in Pembine Cemetery in the Spring. Memorials can be made to the Pembine Rescue Squad or to the Pembine Volunteer Fire Department in his memory. Jacobs Funeral Home, Niagara Chapel is assisting the family with arrangements.
