John P. Wingers, 71, of Marinette, passed away Wednesday, May 30, 2018 at the Oscar Johnson VA Medical Center in Iron Mountain, Mi.
Born March 18, 1947 in Milwaukee, to Frank and Betty (Coakley) Wingers, he came to Marinette at an early age with his family and attended area Parochial Schools. He served in the United States Army from December 1967, serving duty stations in Korea until an honorable discharge in July of 1969.
He returned to Marinette and married the former Diana Behrens in 1970. He worked with his father at B & W Auto Body until his illness at age 27 and battled MS for the remainder of his life.
With help from his family, he maintained the mental capacity to cope with his disabilities with dignity and a positive attitude. The past year and a half was spent in the Iron Mountain VA facility where he received great care from one of the highest rated VA Community Centers in the country.
He is survived by his wife, Diana; a son, Jared (Jackie) Wingers and two grandchildren, all of Marinette and two brothers, George (Margaret) and Chip (Terri).
His parents preceded him in death.
Friends called at Hansen Onion Martell Funeral Home in Marinette on Saturday, June 2 from 11 a.m. until time of the services at 2 p.m., with VA Chaplain Herb Becker officiating, concluded with Military Honors. Private burial was held in the Harmony Cemetery.
