New Peshtigo Superintendent Lists Goals For School Year
Issue Date: July 19, 2018
Patrick Rau, Peshtigo School District Superintendent announced his school board goals and transition plan for the 2018-19 school year at the Wednesday, July 11 School Board Meeting.
The six goals for the year include: 1) Commit resources and professional development needed to establish an effective process to address student learning targets and goals through differentiated instruction. 2) Educate and communicate to the general citizenry regarding the immediate and long-term facility needs associated with the Middle-High School programming along with the costs, the pros and the cons of identified options. 3) Use a multimedia approach to increase communication between the public, the Board of Education, the administration, students and staff of the two school buildings. 4) Commit the resources and professional development needed to maximize the involvement and engagement of all students through the Ready To Learn (RTL) process in an effort to close the achievement gap 5) Develop business partnerships and programming that will promote and support the local workforce needs and 6) Analyze the potential and capacity to expand education opportunities for middle-high school students.
Rau also commented from now through September he would like to meet with each board member individually to learn more about them and their families, would like to secure a list of people to talk to and network with in the community, hold quarterly coffee chats at a local cafe to meet community members and discuss school related issues. He would also like to host events for the community at the school and keep them informed of what is going on in the school district.
The Board discussed the need for a plan of action for hiring a new Director of Special Education to replace Kim Barlament who retired.
The decision was made to have the whole board as a group discuss and decide on candidates rather than a select committee and leave it open to availability of whoever can make the meeting.
Eleven applicants applied for the position with four that stand out over and above the rest. The board along with Rau, Barlament, High School Principal, Chad Sodini and Peshtigo Early Learning Center Principal, Kelly Collins will conduct interviews on Wednesday, July 25 at the District Office starting at 5 p.m.
In Committee Reports, Tom Fischer, Building and Grounds Committee Member, said he looked over the shot put/discus area of what will be constructed and noted the 20x20 pad that was requested is not a necessity and was eliminated at this time. Fischer said, "It can always be added at a later date, this would be a good shop class project".
Also discussed was the completion of the refinishing of lines and logo of the gym floor at the Middle/High School. Comments were made of how great the floor looks. The gym reopened for use on Monday, July 16.
In other discussion, the committee looked at patching and sidewalk projects along with improvements at the concession stand. The committee will meet Wednesday, Aug. 1 to align capital projects for the Middle/High School and again with a follow up meeting on Wednesday, Aug. 29.
Board President, Steve Coble, in his report, said he would like to set a meeting date to review the goals before school starts to align with Kelly Jones and Chad Sodini's schedules. At this time the meeting is set for Wednesday, Aug. 22 at 5 p.m.
Rau and Coble also commented once the goals are developed, they would like to meet with the board to develop stronger goals.
The meeting adjourned to closed session for consideration of the PELC assistant principal candidates. When the committee reconvened no candidate was chosen and the decision was made to refer back to the pool of candidates and select another group to interview at a meeting to be held Friday, July 20.
