Marinette Gives Up One Run In Regional Championship

Marinette Beats Southwest in Regional
The Marinette post 39 Legion boys came away with a Regional playoff opener win in post season action by taking down Green Bay Southwest 10-0. Southwest was allotted the match up with Marinette after defeating Manitowoc 3-0 to start the tournament.
With Matt Osterberg on the mound its no wonder the Southwest team was only able to muster two hits all game long. His efforts helped to shutdown the game early as it hit the 10 run rule by five innings. Osterberg also allowed only one walk while piling up 10 strikeouts.
Most of the hitting action in this matchup occurred during the third inning where Marinette was able to fire in nine runs.
To start the scoring rally Kyler Kruse walked. Austin Marquardt singled to load the bases while Trevor Bloch slammed a two RBI single while Marquardt scored on a throwing error. Next to score was Bloch who cruised home off a Jack Farley single.
Following up the scores was Trey Bretl who was struck by a pitch followed by Rylie Nelson who slammed an RBI single. Kruse returned to the plate for his second at bat of the inning and got an RBI single to kept things rolling. Brandon Eick chipped into the effort with a two RBI some;e while Marquardt tagged on the final run of the inning off a fielders choice.
Kruse drove the nail home in the fifth inning when he leadoff with a single and scored off an Eick single.
Following the game was a contest between Bayport and Kimberly with Bay Port taking the 6-4 win.
At the plate for Marinette Bloch was three for three while Kruse and Eick were both two for two.
Marinette Runs Wild in Semi-Final Action
The Marinette Legion resumed their regional tournament play Friday as they took on Bayport who they handidly defeated by way of a 14-0 readout. It marks the second shutout of the tournament for Marinette who defeated Green Bay Southwest 10-0 to advance.
It certainly was a fast start as both teams battled over the opening innings to gain control of the scoreboard. But control was not gained until the fourth inning when Marinette broke the 0-0 tie with a two run inning.
Matt Osterberg got things going during the two run inning by walking to start and finished with a score off a balk. Kyler Kruse who played a pivotal role in game one of the tournament continued to show his clutch hitting by hitting a double during the fourth and later scoring when Reily Reif hit a sac fly.
During the fifth Osterberg singled for two more runs while Kruse swatted another two RBI hit helping to bring Marinette to a 8-0 lead exiting the fifth.
Marinette was able to muster up six more runs to close the top of the sixth inning. The biggest highlight of the inning came off the bat of Nick Daye who crush a three RBI double to close the evenings scoring.
Taking the win on the mound for Marinette was Bretl who struck out eight while allowing three hits and four walks.
At the plate Marinette's Osterberg was three for three with three runs and two RBIs while Bloch finished three for four with two runs.
The win moved Marinette to the championship round of play where, even if a loss occurred for Post 39 another game would be played due to the double elimination nature of the tournament.
Marinette Bags Regional Championship
The Marinette Post 39 Legion Baseball team was awarded the Regional championship trophy Sunday afternoon when they defeated Green Bay Southwest for the second time this Regional, 2-1.
Through the score was much closer than that of their first post season meeting this year the Marinette boys certainly didn't disappoint. The win advanced Marinette to the State Legion Tournament to be held in Marinette at Pedersen Park July 27-31.
Southwest will follow Marinette into the state tournament as the runner up.
What was most impressive about the game was the fact that only one run was allowed. In fact it was the only run to cross home all tournament for Marinette's opponents.
Both teams put one run across the plate during their first inning efforts. But Marinette broke the tie and locked down the bases fifth.
During that super important fifth inning Austin Marquardt leadoff with a single. Bloch followed with a base off a bunt while Bretl walked to load the bases. Osterberg drove in Marquardt off a single.
Taking the mound win was Matt Eldredge who allowed one run, two hits and no walks while striking out six.
At the plate Marinette's Bloch was three of four while Osterberg was one for three with two RBIs.
Gladstone Defeats Menominee
The Gladstone legion baseball team hosted the Menominee Red Wave Wednesday night, falling to the home field boys 6-1.
Gladstone took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first while Menominee wasn't able to tie the one run lead until the fourth when Schroeder walked and later scored off a Matthew Delfosse double to right field. unfortunately for the Red wave it was the first and last run of the night as Gladstone piled in one during the fifth snd four during the sixth for the win.
Tyson Seymour took the win for Gladstone giving up five hits, one run and one walk while striking out three.
Bryce Tharp was saddled with the loss giving up two runs, six hits and two walks while striking out two.
Menominee Falls to Negaunee in Conference Tournament
The Menominee Red Wave traveled north to Marquartte this past weekend and were faced with a tough Neguanee team who defeated Menomineer 4-2 and yet another tough match up in Copper Country who they defeated 5-0.
Menominee got on the board first with a single run in the third and another in the sixth for the 2-0 lead. But a 4 run seventh for Negaunee proved to be a back breaker for Menominee.
Bryce Tharp took the loss on the mound for the Red Wave giving up five hits, three runs and no walks while striking out three.
Menominee's Jason Janquart was three for three at the plate while Dante Sartorelli and Keagan Monroe both were two for three.
Menominee regains footing in Tourney with Win over Copper Country
Menominee battled back in the consolation bracket after their loss to Negaunee by defeating Copper Country 5-0.
Matthew Delfosse picked up the mound win allowing four hits, no runs and one walk while striking out eight.
At the plate Menominee's Monroe was one for two.
Menominee begins the U.P legion tournament Friday at 3 p.m. with a match up with Gladstone.
