THE CITY REBORN FROM THE ASHES OF AMERICA'S MOST DISASTROUS FOREST FIRE
New Floor In Peshtigo School May Be Aacer Training Project
Issue Date: August 16, 2018
Julie Williams was formally approved as the new Special Education director for Peshtigo School District a very brief regular monthly school board meeting on Wednesday, Aug. 8. The board had agreed to offer her the position after discussion at a special closed session on Tuesday, July 24.
After the board voted without dissent to formally hire Williams Board President Steve Coble offered her a hearty, "Welcome Aboard!" Superintendent Patrick Rau told the board she has in fact already started working.
Voting in favor of hiring her in addition to Coble were Bob Thomas, Tom Fischer, Mike Fifarek, Rebecca DeMarce and Joshua Seefeldt. Kelly Jones abstained and Mike Finger was absent and excused.
The board also approved Becky Cording as Middle School Volleyball Coach, again without dissent. Cording was JV volleyball coach last year.
Rau advised the board that the school has received a $59,577 School Safety Grant from Wisconsin Department of Justice. There was no discussion at the meeting on exactly what the money will be used for, but board vote in favor of accepting it was unanimous.
Also in the good news department, Brian Williams, Director of Buildings and Grounds, has informed Rau and the board that the district has an opportunity to have a new wood gym floor installed in the Peshtigo Elementary Learning Center Multipurpose Room for only $12,000, in return for allowing Aacer Flooring and Stalker Flooring do the installation as a training session from Oct. 7 through Oct. 28. Williams was told the normal price for this floor from Stalker Flooring would be about $80,000.
In connection with the training for about 35 individuals, the firms would need about five parking spaces and would show training videos in currently vacant elementary classroom No. 11. Before the training begins Aacer will do background checks on all individuals who will enter the building, Williams said.
He had met on Monday, Aug. 6 with Janelle Pederson, marketing coordinator; Jason Nieminski, technical manager, and Ray Web, president, all of Aacer Flooring, and Steve Stalker, president of Stalker Flooring.
The board indicated they are definitely interested, and will take formal action at a future meeting. Coble said the possibility of this agreement had been discussed back in January.
Fischer, chair of the Buildings and Grounds Committee, reported they have begun their room by room inspection in preparation for the first day of school on Tuesday, Sept. 4, and at 5 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 29 they will meet to look over the grounds and building exteriors.
There was brief discussion on a major problem with seagulls, and the likelihood that wire fencing will again be put up to deter them.
Rau reminded the board that they have a goals meeting scheduled for 5 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 22. This is to be a pot luck event, with everyone bringing a dish to share. Jones agreed to coordinate the food portion of the meeting.
Staff will report to work for the new school year on Monday, Aug. 27 for inservice sessions that last through Thursday, Aug. 30. Rau invited board members to join the staff for their opening breakfast.
No one addressed the board during time for public comment. All bills were approved for payment as presented, and there were no resignations or retirements.
