THE CITY REBORN FROM THE ASHES OF AMERICA'S MOST DISASTROUS FOREST FIRE
Northwoods Auction Is Sunday, Sept. 2
Issue Date: August 29, 2018
The 42nd annual fund raiser and auction at Sally and JC's Northwoods Bar at W10707 Benson Lake Road in Athelstane for Athelstane Volunteer Fire Department and Silver Cliff Rescue Squad will start with a brief parade at 10:30 a.m. on Sunday, Sept. 2 and continue until 4 or 5 p.m.
The parade will start at the Fire Station at W10073 County Road C, Athelstane, and travel about a quarter of a mile to the bar at the corner of Benson Lake Road and Northway Drive. The auction will start immediately afterward, at about 11 a.m. There will also be kiddie games, raffles and food.
The event, in accord with long-standing tradition, is sponsored by John and Sally Nelson, current owners of the Northwoods Bar.
Sally said how long the auction lasts depends on how many contributions have been dropped off. Everything to be auctioned has been donated. They currently have about two and a half garages full, including a boat, motor and trailer that someone dropped off. Last year they raised over $14,000.
According to Sally it all started 42 years ago, when Toby and Edie Cerull owned the bar. Someone donated a handmade quilt, and Edie auctioned it off and donated the money to the fire department and rescue squad. The fund raising grew from there. Each owner since has carried on the tradition of organizing the event. "We bought that responsibility along with the bar," Sally said. Everybody donates their time and items to be auctioned are all donated, so it is a total community effort.
