THE CITY REBORN FROM THE ASHES OF AMERICA'S MOST DISASTROUS FOREST FIRE
Crivitz VFW Post Essay Competitions
Issue Date: September 13, 2018
Crivitz-The Crivitz VFW Post 2063 and Auxiliary will again sponsor two essay competitions for area students. Patriot's Pen is a written essay competition for youths in grades 6, 7, and 8 and gives students an opportunity to express their views on an annual theme. This year's theme is "Why I Honor the American Flag." Entry deadline is Oct. 31.
Prize money in the amounts of $50, $100, and $150 are offered for the top three entries judged by a panel of members. Winners at the local level are eligible to compete at the next three higher levels - district, state, and national. National awards range from $500 for the 25th-53rd place winners to $5,000 for 1st place.
The Voice of Democracy is the VFW's scholarship program and is open to students in grades 9-12 enrolled in a public, private, or parochial high school, or a home study program. This year's theme is "Why My Vote Matters." Students record a 3-5-minute oral essay on the theme and prize money and scholarships are awarded at the post, district, state and national levels. Winners at the local level are eligible for cash awards of $100, $150, and $200. The top national award is $30,000. Deadline to the Post is also Oct. 31. State winners receive and all-expense paid trip to Washington, D.C. to tour the city, be honored by the VFW and its Auxiliary, and receive their award.
