Bulldogs Have Busy Week With Mixed Results

Issue Date: September 13, 2018

It was a mixed bag for Peshtigo's soccer over the past week.

On Wednesday, Sept. 5, Peshtigo beat rival Marinette by a 7-2 score for the first time since 2014.

On Thursday, the Bulldogs tied with Algoma at two goals apiece. The Bulldogs gave up two goals early but worked back to salvage a tie.

Trent Carriveau got the first Peshtigo goal on an assist by Johnny Conn, who equalized on a goal of his own, scoring off a corner from Damon Jones.

"The team did a great job keeping its composure and finally tied the game in the closing minute," coach Joe Denny said.

Against Iron Mountain on Saturday, Peshtigo beat Iron Mountain 2-0 on goals from Ty Davis and Trent Carriveau, with Nolan Lemke adding an assist on the second.

Marquette took care of the Bulldogs later in the day, however, beating them to the tune of an 11-3 score. Hunter Howarth had a hat-trick for Peshtigo.

Monday, Peshtigo fell to Three Lakes 7-1. Cade Tackmier scored on an assist from Damon Jones in the second half.

In the first half, the team struggled and went down five.

"I was able to get a look at those coming off the bench and what kind of chemistry they had playing together," Denny said. "We struggled to pressure the ball and gave away some easy goals going into the half down by five. We came out in the second half with a different lineup and played them very well despite giving up two goals."

Peshtigo Runs Away From Marinette With Big Second Half

Peshtigo and Marinette have been soccer rivals since the relatively recent start of the programs.

For Peshtigo, Wednesday, Sept. 5 was a good chapter in the teams' history, as they topped the Marines 7-2 with a big second half.

Johnny Conn scored early in the game to give the Bulldogs a lead, but it looked like Marinette would hang around when Justin Netemeyer scored in the first half to tie it at one.

Damon Jones continued his scoring pace to give the Bulldogs a lead, and Cade Tackmier scored to make it 3-1.

Kadin Sinks scored in the first half to cut it to 3-2 and it looked like Peshtigo had ceded the momentum to Marinette.

"I felt after it was 3-2, we had a little bit of momentum. We were just able to move the ball into the other half," Marinette coach Frank Pohlman said.

It was all Bulldogs from there on out, however. Breyden Demmith scored on a header from a Jones assist with 30 minutes to go, then did it again to make it 5-2 on a Tackmier assist 10 minutes later.

Jones got his second five minutes later and Conn had goal number two to make it six in the 83rd minute.

"What made us strong in the first three games was we didn't concede a single goal. Imagine that, 217 minutes without a goal and today, it's seven," Pohlman said. "In the first three games, defensively, we played extremely concentrated, avoided all mistakes and did really great. Today, I would say three or four of the Peshtigo goals they were out of individual mistakes we made. Sometimes, you have a bad day."

Peshtigo had 14 shots on goal to Marinette's five.

"I think we've got two very talented seniors up front in Trent Carriveau and Damon Jones that if the outside isn't working, it's a dual threat in the center," Peshtigo coach Joe Denny said, also praising his defense's work.

"Our defense played outstanding. I couldn't give enough credit to our defense," Denny said. "They're a young defense coming in: two freshmen and a sophomore, and you couldn't ask for a better defense back there. We have two seniors running in the center also who are great contributors to that group also."

Ezra Swanson manned the net for the first time. Denny said the goals came off "mistakes that a new goalie would make," but said, "it's something we've been working on in practices and things like that, but you get into a game scenario and it's different."

The last time Peshtigo beat Marinette was in 2014, when Ezra's cousin, Jacob Swanson, made 10 saves in a 6-2 win over the Marines.

Senior Kris VanSickle scored four goals on 10 shots in that game to fire Peshtigo to the win. For the seniors on this team, it was big to get a win over Marinette.

"My seniors wanted to play this whole game. This was the first time they beat in Marinette in four years, so they wanted to play it out," Denny said. "These guys have been playing against these kids their whole lives in rec soccer and everything else, so it was great to see them come out and really deliver and believe in themselves because Marinette was a really good team."
