Ronald "Satch" Englund, 83, of Menominee, Mi., passed away Saturday, Sept. 29, 2018 at Bay Area Medical Center.
Born April 18, 1935 in Menominee, to the late Louis and Lucille (Payne) Englund, he graduated from Menominee High School in 1953, where he participated in basketball, track and football and was a member of the 1952 undefeated football team. He served in the United States Armed Forces during the Korean War and married the former Paula Langer on Sept. 29, 1956 at Our Lady of Lourdes Church in Marinette.
He delivered bread for Mrs. Karl's bakery for 30 years, was a well known sports figure and could be found for many years on the sidelines where he coached Pop Warner Football from 1958 -1971.
In 1975, he began his long tenure with the Menominee Maroons Football team until 2017 where he helped coach the team to three State Championships. In 1974, he started the grade school basketball program at Menominee Catholic Central where he coached until 1990. He then was the head girl's varsity basketball coach there, coaching from 1990 until 2010 where he earned 217 wins and coached the Cavalette's to six straight State Championships from 1992-1997. He also coached Little League baseball from 1966-1974.
He loved fishing and family trips to Indian Lake for 38 years and enjoyed his Thursday morning breakfast with Coach Hofer, but mostly time with family is what her cherished most. He was a member of Holy Spirit Catholic Church.
He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Paula of Menominee; five children, Cecelia (Casey) Wolford of St. Augusta, Mn., Michael (Julie), Thomas (Cathy) and Patrick (Kelly), all of Menominee and Katy (Eric) Saxton of Green Bay; nine grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren and two brothers, Doug (Joan) of Wallace and Durand (Bev) of Menominee.
Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by two sons, Christian and Timothy and three brothers, Donald, Dennis and Dale.
Visitation will take place Wednesday, Oct. 3 in the Menominee High School Gymnasium from 4 p.m. until time of a Vigil Prayer Service at 7:30 p.m., with Fr. Mark McQuesten presiding. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at Holy Spirit Catholic Church on Thursday, Oct. 4 at 10 a.m. with Fr. Mark McQuesten presiding. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery in Menominee. Anderson Kell Funeral Home of Menominee is assisting the family with arrangements. In his honor and love for high school sports, the family requests that you wear your favorite high school colors to his visitation. A memorial fund was established for the M&M Hornets and Menominee Maroons. Any expressions can be directed to Paula Englund in her name.
