Hildegarde Mary Polfus Issue Date: November 29, 2018
Hildegarde Mary Polfus, 92, longtime resident of Carney, Mi., passed away Tuesday, Nov. 26, 2018 at Pinecrest Medical Care Facility in Powers Mi.
Born Sept.16, 1926 in Germany, to August and Maria (Treutler) Birke, at the age of 2 she came, with her mother on the ship "New York", through Ellis Island to join her father in Milwaukee who was working there to provide for her passage to New York.
After her mother's death when she was 10, the family moved to the Upper Peninsula and ran a farm five miles east of Nadeau Mi. It was hard work and she always did her part.
She met Ervin Polfus at a local dance and they married on Nov. 12, 1949. They raised six children, Paul, Robert, Carolyn, Patricia, Ervin, Jr. and Joanne. Their longtime home was at Maple Hill in Gourley, Mi.
She worked as a housewife and later was a nurse's aide at Pinecrest Medical Care Facility. Devoted to her family, many times she made sacrifices for her children's well being. Her care for her family and support of their activities was second to none and a lifetime example for them to follow.
An avid reader, baker, cook, seamstress, carpenter and gardener, she always had a hot cup of coffee and bakery handy. She sewed beautiful quilts for all her children, was known to be strong-willed in her beliefs and activities and would give you the shirt off her back to make things better. She was a member of the Carney Evangelical Free Church.
She is survived by three sons, Paul (Colleen) of Carney, Robert (Toni) of Lake Tomahawk, Ervin, Jr. (Lori) of Hermansville; daughters: Carolyn Laurin (John), Patricia Polfus (husband, Tim) of Green Bay and Joanne of Carney; 12 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Ervin in 2010 and a brother, Herbert in 2011.
Family will receive friends at Carney Free Church on Sunday, Dec. 2, 2018 from 2 p.m. until time of the funeral service at 4 p.m. Pastor Kit Bogan will officiate with burial in Maple Grove Cemetery in Oakwood. Anderson Diehm Funeral Home of Stephenson is assisting the family with arrangements.
