Coleman Claims 16th Straight M&O Title

Issue Date: January 23, 2019

When it comes to wrestling in the M&O Conference, no one can compete with Coleman, as was seen in Friday's conference tournament, where no team scored on the Cougars over three matches.

In the first match of the day, Coleman defeated Crivitz 74-0. The Cougars defeated Gillett/Suring 75-0 and they finished the day with a 78-0 win over Lena/St. Thomas Aquinas Academy. Some Coleman wrestlers didn't need to step on the map on the night. Those that did were undefeated.

Against Crivitz, Spencer Karban (220) pinned John Danielson in 27 seconds, Kasey Casper (126) pinned Elijah Duerst in 52 seconds, Caleb Gross (132) won by 20-4 tech fall, Jake Baldwin (145) pinned Tony Jopek in 1:23, Shamus McLain won in a 16-0 tech fall against Jaden Bemis and Jonathon Bieber won by 9-0 major decision against Joseph Tomaszewski.

Chance Gruber (106), Koltin Grzybowski (113, Karson Casper (138), Bryce Karban (152), Tyler Blanchard (160), Cole Klimek (170) and Brock Martinson (285) won by forfeit.

Gillett/Suring was no closer. Martinson pinned Jake Burt in 34 seconds, McLain pinned Mike VanDenElzen in a minute, 34 seconds and Spencer Karban won in a 2:34 pin against Brody Zahn.

Probably the most highly anticipated match of the day was between Karson Casper and Sam Lemens at 138. Casper won by a 7-2 decision.

Casper took Lemens down twice in the first period to take a 4-1 lead and carried it through three periods.

"Karson went out and wrestled a great match," Coleman coach Kevin Casper said.

Gruber, Grzybowski, Kasey Casper, Gross, Baldwin, Bryce Karban, Blanchard, Klimek and Bieber won by forfeit.

In the 78-point win over Lena/STAA, Kasey Casper pinned Franky Umentum in 59 seconds, Gross won in 52 seconds against Alex Decoursin, Karson Casper got the fastest win of the day with an 11-second pin of James Desjarlis at 138, Baldwin (145) pinned Cody Dellise in 1:17, Bryce Karban pinned Noah Chang in 1:28 and Blanchard pinned Kiko Cajagas in 38 seconds.

Gruber, Grzybowski, McLain, Klimek, Bieber, Spencer Karban and Martinson each won by forfeit.

The forfeits helped, but Coleman still had to win its live matches.

"The numbers are definitely down this year in the conference but it was great to see all 13 of our wrestlers go undefeated for the night and shut out all three teams, which has probably never been done," coach Casper said.

Lena/STAA took second in the conference, defeating the two other teams.

They beat Gillett/Suring 30-18. For Lena/STAA, Richard Feick pinned Jake Burt in 2:51, but that was the team's only live match win. Franky Umentum (126), Alex Decoursin (132), Noah Chang (145 and Cody Dellise (152) each won by forfeit.

For Gillett/Suring, Brody Zahn won by forfeit at 220. Sam Lemens (138) pinned James Desjarlis in 1:49 and Mike VanDenElzen (170) won in 3:53.

Lena/STAA beat Crivitz 36-24. Feick, Cajagas, Chang and Desjarlis won by forfeit, while Umentum pinned Elijah Duerst in 15 seconds and Decoursin pinned Ryley Bemis in 3:32.

Crivitz got forfeit wins from Jaden Bemis (182), Joseph Tomaszewski (195) and John Danielson (220). Tony Jopek pinned Dellise in 2:57.

Crivitz beat Gillett/Suring 27-9. In three live matches, Gillett/Suing's Brody Zahn beat John Danielson 11-6 at 220, Crivitz got a 33-second pin from Bemis at 182 over VanDenElzen and Jopek beat Lemens 7-6.

G/S got a forfeit win from Jake Burt. Crivitz got free points from Duerst and Bemis.

Coleman Grapplers Pound Green Bay Preble

Coleman won every live match against Green Bay Preble on Tuesday, allowing 12 points off forfeits but winning 67-12.

For the Cougars, Change Gruber (106) pinned Trentin Phillips in a minute and 26 seconds, Koltin Grzybowski (120) beat Connor Derenne 14-6, Caleb Gross (132) pinned Joe Weltzien in 3:56 and Karson Casper beat Collin Derenne 7-2.

The rest of the match flew by. Jake Baldwin (145) pinned Logan Peterson in 25 seconds, Bryce Karban (152) pinned Brody Wolfe in 37 seconds, Tyler Blanchard (160) pinned Jonathon Arellano in 43 seconds and Shamus McLain (170) pinned Devin Laplante in 1:01.

Following forfeit wins from Cole Klimek and Jonathon Bieber at 182 and 195, it was back to work for a couple quick pins.

Spencer Karban (220) pinned Logan Nowak in 42 seconds and it took Brock Martinson (285) in 1:58 to finish the day off.

Marinette Falls in Tight Match With Denmark

Marinette lost a tight one to Denmark on Friday, 45-30.

The Marines won four of the first five matches. Josh Walker (138) pinned Logan Paplham in four minutes, 40 seconds, Sam Gressel (145) pinned Brian Sloma in 1:26, Sam McClain (160) pinned Alex Schmitz in 1:28 and Sean Holk (170) beat Riley Ullmer in 1:37. Only a Reece Piontek (152) pin of Domenic Paradiso in 2:42 ruined Marinette's perfect start.

Denmark would win the next five matches to reclaim the match, however. Bradyn Polomis (182) pinned Dakota Cuff, Gabe Wertel (195) pinned John Boyce and Luke Abrahamson (285) beat Reese Holder in a 4-2 decision. T.J. Weidman (220) and Casey Ducat (106) won by forfeit to help the Viking cause.

Jonny Bieber (113) and Isaiah Walker (132) won by 7-1 and 9-4 decisions, respectively. The wins were split by pins from Lucas Soquet (120) and Cole Tenor (126) for Denmark, as they beat Owen Suennen and Alec Queever.

Menominee Competes at Westwood Triangular

Menominee fell to Iron Mountain and Westwood in Westwood on Thursday.

The Maroons started with a 51-12 loss to Iron Mountain. Menominee's Hunter Wroblewski (152) pinned Jon Carrion in two minutes, 32 seconds. Seth Smith (171) pinned Myles Carey in 1:43.

Iron Mountain also won two live matches. Caleb Burklund (189) pinned Adam Conine in 56 seconds and Dow Dawson (130) beat Aidan Smith 11-5.

Iron Mountain got seven wins by forfeit and two classes were double forfeits.

Westwood defeated Menominee 66-16 despite Menominee winning three of the four live matches.

Westwood had a full team, meaning 10 pin victories. For Menominee, Aidan Smith beat Alana Nuorala in an 11-1 major decision and Seth Smith won by pin in three minutes, six seconds. Wroblewski (152) pinned James Pietro in 50 seconds.

Westwood's only live win was a 1:19 pin from Jackson Vidlund at 189 over Adam Conine.

Northwoods Storm Grapplers Compete at Shell Lake Challenge

Florence/Niagara competed at the Shell Lake Challenge in Shell Lake on Saturday.

Tristen Mascarette took second at 126. He started the day with a bye, then pinned Thorp's Jacob Schultze in 38 seconds. Another quick win in 24 seconds against Hayward/Northwood's Jason Yost put him in the fifth round, where he won by 12-2 major decision against Chequamegon's Jaden Schienebeck, who is 26-8 on the season. He fell 4-1 in the final, however, as he couldn't hand Ashland's Jarod Stricker (33-0) his first loss of the season.

Josh Broullire (145) finished fourth. He lost his first two matches, but won two of his next three to claim fourth.

Dakota Wicke took sixth at 138 with a 2-3 record on the day. Both of his wins came via pin. The first was in 26 seconds. Clayton Armstrong took ninth at 285 with a pin victory in his final match of the day.

Oconto Falls Matmen Downed by Wrightstown

Oconto Falls' wrestling team has been able to handle most teams it has faced this season. Whether the Panthers did that on Friday is up for debate.

The difference in the match was Wrightstown's forfeit wins and wins by pin. Oconto Falls won six of the 10 live matches, but lost by 23 points, 42-19, as they won by five decisions for three points each.

For Oconto Falls, Jaden Ganter started off with a 2-1 decision win over Adeline Koltz at 106. Jager Eisch followed it up with a 19-3 tech fall for five points at 113, beating Kaden Verbeten. At 120, Wrightstown got four points with a Kaiden Koltz major decision over Collin Schindel, 10-2, but Falls got a 3-2 decision at 126 from Tyler Budz over Jaeger Pavlik.

From there, it was all Wrightstown. Sean Rietz (132) won by tech fall over Trevor Schindel, Wyatt Bruecker (138) beat Bodee Woods 8-7 and Will Alexander (145) won by forfeit.

Oconto Falls' Clayton Whiting (152) beat Ben Durocher 6-4 and Aidan Stary (170) beat Quincy Klister 10-4 for three points. Elijah Zielinski beat Austin Koltz 10-5.

For Wrightstown, Hunter Bartoszek (182) pinned Brant Roland, while Ethan Witcpalek (285) and Logan Koel (195) won by forfeit.

In an exhibition at 152, Jeremy Caldwell of Oconto Falls pinned Vincent Jaeger in 1:59.

Peshtigo Downed by Southern Door in Packerland Contest

Peshtigo won more live matches than Southern Door on Thursday, but forfeits didn't do the Bulldogs any favors as they took a 54-22 loss.

Southern Door started with forfeit wins in seven of the first nine matches. Victories by Southern Door's Dylan Wessel at 120 and Peshtigo's Nick Parrette at 138 broke up the stretch of forfeits.

Wessel pinned Omer Farghali in two minutes, 30 seconds and Parrette beat Drew Price in a 9-0 major decision.

Peshtigo's Katelynn Lewis (170) pinned Bradley Skippon with 15 seconds left in their match, Reese DeMarce (182) won by forfeit and Riley Plosczynski (220) pinned Riley Phillips in 40 seconds.

Wroblewski Leads Maroons at U.P. Championships

Menominee took 14th of 17 teams at the U.P. Championships over the weekend.

Escanaba won the team championship. Gladstone was second and Iron Mountain took third.

Individually, Hunter Wroblewski was the top finisher, taking third in the 152-pound class.

He pinned Escanaba's Ryan VanEffen in two minutes, 40 seconds, but was beaten by 23-5 Hunter Brown of LaSalle in the semifinal. He finished the day with a tech fall over Munising's Devin Moore, 16-0.

Aidan Smith took fourth at 130. He started by pinning Sault Area's Wyatt Miller in 3:14, but was beaten in his final two matches, once by pin and once by decision.

Seth Smith went 3-2 at 171, winning by three pins in 42 seconds, 1:20 and 4:55, which was enough to earn him a sixth-place finish.

Adam Conine did not place at 189.
