Crivitz Tops M&O Leaders; Race Tightens

Issue Date: January 31, 2019

Suring Edges STAA With Second Half Comeback

A balanced scoring attack led the Suring Eagles to a 46-40 win over St. Thomas Aquinas Academy on Thursday as they avoided an M&O upset.

STAA's Alexa Pristelski scored 24 to lead all scorers knocking down seven three pointers, but the rest of the team combined for 16 points in a losing effort. STAA led 20-19 at the half but Suring got 27 in the second to eek out a win.

Kylee Stelzer had 13 for Suring, with Ryann Wagner chipping in eight, Paige Krueger scoring seven and Wylee VanBellinger adding six.

Lily Lefebvre scored six and Olivia Benson added five for STAA, which is still searching for that elusive first M&O Conference win.

Marinette Downed by Denmark in Low Scoring Affair

Whether it was slow pace, poor shooting or lockdown defense, the Marinette Marines and Denmark Vikings played to a low-scoring 34-28 game on Thursday, with Denmark getting the win.

Marinette scored just 11 points in the first half, trailing by nine. Offensive rebounds by the Vikings hurt the Marines in the first half, but Marinette was better in that regard. The biggest challenge for the Marines was working past a 1-3-1 Denmark zone.

"We prepared for it, we just didn't run our 1-3-1 offense like we should have," Marinette coach Bob Smith said. "When we had girls running it, we didn't have girls with the ball understanding where everybody was. We had open girls cutting, we had open girls flashing and we didn't make those passes when we should have. It's little things like that we need to do better before playoff time."

While scoring was hard to come by, you can't remain in a game like Thursday's without playing good defense. Last time the teams met, Marinette allowed 63 points, so a 34-point effort was a small win for Marinette.

"It was a much, much better defensive effort," Smith said. "We got a little tired because our bench isn't very deep."

Marinette's Katelyn Kitzinger scored 11. Abby Wingender had seven.

Abby Maricque led the Vikings with 13 points.

Coleman Takes Down Lena

The Coleman Cougar girls played host to the Lena Wildcats Thursday night and were able to come away with a 36-20 victory.

Coleman started with a nice scoring push that saw them ahead at the half 19-9.

Lena rallied up 11 points over the second half while the Coleman Cougars ice the game with 17 to close.

Coleman's Kyla Manning led all scorers with 12 points while Cameron Compe posted a nine point effort.

Lena was led by McKenna Portier with eight points. Kennedy Marquardt posted six

Florence Falls To Elcho

The Florence Bobcats were left behind in a match they held with Elcho last Thursday as Elcho went on to win 33-26.

Leading the Bobcats was Jenna Springer who posted 13 points and Jordan Springer who posted five.

Wausaukee Continues Ways With Win Over Gillett

The Gillett Tigers who have shown they can turn the tables on tough competition were unable to find a way against Wausaukee 60-44.

The Rangers, who have their eye on the M&O lead increased their win column with the defeat of Gillett.

The Rangers were all over the Tigers as they built a 40-21 lead by the intermission. Madelyn Schlies went wild during the opening frame hitting for 17 points.

Though the tiger were unable it meet the Ranger lead they did have a competition login for the top scoring spot for the night. That spot was shared by Wausaukee's Madelyn Schlies and Gillett's Aubrey DeBauch. The two rivals finished the night knotted up at 22 points each.

Following M. Schlies on the Ranger score sheets was Stephaine Murray who posted 11 on the night and Kaelyn Schlies who got nine by games end.

Gillett's other top scorers were Macy Frant with seven and Camryn Long with six.

Wolverines Win Thriller Over Thunderhawks

The Crivitz Wolverines won heck of a game Thursday night when they hosted the Oneida Nation Thunderhawks who they defeated by one score 34-32.

Though the game ended with a bang it certainly didn't start that way as the Wolverines built a hefty 22-14 lead going into the break.

Oneida managed to post 18 over the second half which proved to be nearly enough but a tough Wolverine squad was able to ensure victory.

Leading the Thunderhawks was M'Kenzey Ackley with 11 points while Malia Jacobs and Naomi House both posted nine each.

Crivitz was led by Chloe Gruszynski and Sianna Guns who both posted 10 points each. Bailey Bemis posted six.

Wolverines Upset Rangers in Weekend Make Up Game

The Crivitz Wolverines who are in the hunt for the M&O conference title pulled off a major victory last Saturday when the Wausaukee Rangers traveled to town for a rescheduled game. By the end of competition the Wolverines had secured the all important win 44-33.

Crivitz started getting ahead early, entering the half with the lead 24-19, and once that lead was theirs they refused to let it got, piling on 20 more points to close the game. Wausuakee ended the night with a 14 point second half effort.

Wolverine Chloe Gruszynski was the games top shooter, hitting for a nice 16 point total. Sienna Guns followed up with 10 points while Bailey Bemis and Emalee Johnsen both added seven.

Wausaukee was led by Kaelyn Schlies with 11 points and Madelyn Schlies with nine points.
