Coleman Wins Regional Title; Area Wrestlers Advance to Sectionals

Issue Date: February 14, 2019

Coleman Sends All 14 Wrestlers To Sectionals, Claims 11 Champs

In a program full of records and history, the 2018-19 Coleman Cougars wrestling team keeps accomplishing things that haven't been done before.

At Saturday's home Division III Regional, all 14 Coleman wrestlers advanced to sectionals and 11 won their respective weight classes.

Coleman coach Kevin Casper said he didn't think that was something the Cougars had done before.

"All the kids wrestled really well on Saturday; they wrestled excellent, actually," he said. "To get all 14 guys in the championship was a first as well. To get 11 champions is a great performance by the team."

Chance Gruber (106), Koltin Grzybowski (113), Kasey Casper (120), Caleb Gross (126), Karson Casper (132), Jake Baldwin (145), Bryce Karban (152), Tyler Blanchard (160), Shamus McLain (170), Spencer Karban (220) and Brock Martinson (285) each won their respective weight classes.

In a regional full of depleted teams with low numbers, many Coleman wrestlers wrestled only one live match and no class winner wrestled more than two live matches.

"As a team they all really wrestled well, which was encouraging because of all the time we've had off. You miss practices and you sometimes wonder, "what are they going to look like? That didn't seem to matter," Coach Casper said. "The kids seemed to wrestle well and their conditioning was there, but granted, this regional wasn't as tough as it normally has been in the past. The numbers were down, so that helped."

Jonathon Bieber (195), Cole Klimek (182) and Jakob Horton (138) each took second in their respective weight classes.

Bieber's path to sectionals was especially tough, Casper said. He faced Darius Wayka in the semifinal, beating him 11-5 to hand him just his seventh loss of the season. In the second-place match, he got the win by rule over Wayka, who is now 24-7. His loss came to 38-2 Jacob Giese of Bonduel.

Bonduel was second as a team at the regional. Menominee Indian took third and Lena/St. Thomas Aquinas Academy placed fourth.

For Lena/STAA, Alex Decoursin placed second at 132 and Richard Fieck was second at 285 to advance to sectionals.

Kevin Chang (120), Franky Umentum (126), Noah Chang (138) and Kiko Cajegas (160) were each third in their weight classes. Cody Dellisle took fourth at 145.

Gillett/Suring was fifth as a team. Sam Lemens (138) won his weight class, Mike VanDenElzen (170) was second and both Brody Zahn (220) and Jake Burt (285) were fourth.

Five Wolverines Advance To D3 Sectional; Crandon Wins Regional

Five Crivitz Wolverines advanced to sectionals from the Division III Regional in Crandon on Saturday.

Crivitz was third as a team, behind Three Lakes/Phelps and Crandon. Elcho placed fourth.

Tony Jopek (145), Jaden Bemis (182), Joseph Tomaszewski (195) and John Danielson (220) each won their respective weight classes. Bemis and Danielson wrestled one match each and Tomaszewski didn't have to step on the mat all day, as he was the only 182-pounder in Crandon.

Ryley Bemis (126) was second to advance to sectionals and Elijah Duerst (120) took fourth.

Wabeno/Laona was fifth. Derek Moravec (152) and Evan Townsend (160) each won their respective weight classes.

Jackson Smith (145) was third, Frank Shepard (138) took fourth and Paige Peterson (132) came in third.

Florence/Niagara took sixth. Former state qualifier Tristen Mascarette is headed back to sectionals after two pins in the 120-pound weight class, which he won. Coleton Armstrong (285) was second in his class, Dakota Wicke (138) took third and Josh Broullire (145) was fifth in his weight class.

Oconto Falls 2nd, Host Marinette 3rd at Div. 2 Regional Oconto Falls 2nd, Host Marinette 3rd at Div. 2 Regional

It's not too often that regional wrestling comes to Marinette.

Saturday was actually just the second time ever"and first since 1994"that regionals were held in Marinette.

"We were excited to have it here, excited to get some fans in here and create a bit of buzz for the program. It's definitely on the rise," Marinette coach Jason Champagne said.

The Marines responded on their home mat by sending three wrestlers to sectionals and taking third overall behind Freedom and Oconto Falls.

Jonny Bieber (113), Sean Holk (170) and Reese Holder (195) are each headed to sectionals after Bieber was second and the latter two won their weight classes.

Holk got two byes and then pinned Oconto Falls' Aidan Stary in 5:01.

"Sean's a very opportunistic wrestler and he got in the scramble position and he knows what to do in those situations," Champagne said. "He caught the kid on his back and got the pin."

Holder won his only match, a 12-4 major decision over Freedom's Grant Vosters. Holder wrestled most of the year at 220, but he's cut down to 195, where he's a "matchup nightmare" for opposing wrestlers, according to Champagne.

Whereas some 195-pounders aren't a full 195 pounds, Holder is 6-foot-3, 195 pounds, which causes smaller wrestlers a lot of problems.

Bieber had to wrestle twice, with a pin victory over Freedom's Colton Kater the decider.

For Marinette, Brayden Zuraski (120), Josh Walker (145) and Darik McMahon (285) were each third. Sam McClain (160) and Owen Suennen (126) were fourth, Anthony Jardeen (182) and Sam Gressel (138) took fifth and Dakota Cuff (220) was sixth.

"We're excited to get back to work and get ready for next weekend," Champagne said.

Oconto Falls was second as a team, putting five wrestlers through to sectionals.

Collin Schindel (120) was second at 120 with a pin win in the semifinal and a loss in the final to 22-5 Colby McHugh of Freedom, who was just too physical, Panthers coach Marc Kinziger said.

At 126, Tyler Budz was second, looking for his second trip back to state after going two years ago.

Freshman Clayton Whiting (152) won by tech fall and pin over his opponents, dominating on his way to sectionals.

"For a freshman, that's about as good as they come," Kinziger said. "At that weight class, he's got the strength. He certainly has the mind for it and the work ethic is all there. He's got it all going on for him and he made it look pretty easy today."

Aidan Stary (170) took second after a 1-1 record, falling to Holk for his only loss. Elijah Zielinski (220) was second as well, also going 1-1.

Oconto Falls has a young squad, with only five seniors on the team, one of whom is advancing.

Graeson Pankratz (106), Bodee Woods (138), Trevor Pankratz (160), Jacob Kaminski (182) and Caleb Carlton (195) were each third. Joshua Czerwinski (285) and Brendan Konitzer (113) each took fourth and Trevor Schindel (132) placed fifth.

After New London, Seymour and Clintonville/Marion, Peshtigo took seventh. The Bulldogs' season came to an end, with no finisher above fourth.

Nick Parrett, the best Bulldog wrestler all year, took fourth. He lost a sudden victory 9-7 to Woods in the semifinal.

"We thought that was a match to get to sectionals," Peshtigo coach Warren Howard said.

In the third-place match, he tried to throw New London's Mason Kloehn and ended up on his back, losing by pin short of sectionals.

"I think after that first match he kind of saw the writing on the wall and maybe just didn't wrestle as well as he should have," Howard said.

Omer Fargahli (120), Reese DeMarce (182) and Riley Plosczynski (220) were each fourth and John Schaut (145) placed sixth.

Sectionals will be held Saturday in Wrightstown.
