Happy Birthday, Mr. Washington! Not all presidents deserve a day to honor them, but of them all, you are most worthy of respect and remembrance. Wonder if school kids today are being taught that politicians of your day were willing to help make you king of the new United States of America, but you turned down their offer in favor of a Republic, with a president elected by the people from all walks of life, not just the elite. Hope our politicians of today do not throw away the wonderful start you gave us!
Schools across TIMESland are changing calendars to make up for the number of school days already cancelled this year due to frigid weather, ice and snow. The state Department of Public Instruction says it won't budge on the number of minutes of classroom instruction offered for students, so days off are being cancelled, lengths of days are being extended, and in some cases, the term may be extended farther into June. And now we're getting more snow! Three to six inches on Wednesday, and more intermittently during the next 10 days! Temperatures are expected to be rather moderate, though, so that's a good thing.
Son, Tom, forwarded a cartoon about a fellow who was a newcomer to the sport of bow hunting. The novice hunter was advised to watch for deer sign, then post nearby and wait for a deer to come along.
So there he was, dressed in his brand new camouflage, bow at the ready, leaning up against a "Deer Crossing" sign post!
The last day of the High Falls Radar Run snowmobile races is on Saturday, Feb. 23 on Boat Landing 3 Road and the Iron Snowshoe Snowmobile Trail 12 Miles west of Crivitz. Registration is at 8:30 a.m. Racing will go from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on the 800 foot long track. Trophies sponsored by local businesses will be awarded for top speeds in various classes of snowmobiles, motorcycles, and ATV, UTV & More. Food and refreshments will be sold by the Iron Snow Shoe Associate Club. The event is sponsored by the Twin Bridge Waterski Team. For more information call 715-757-3511.
Ice fishing is in full swing on Lake Noquebay, and the Lake Noquebay Anglers Partnership Fish O Rama Fishing Derby will run from 6 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday,Feb. 23 from the shore at Timberline Resort. There will be door prizes, bucket raffles, food, and beverages in a heated tent on the lake. Cash prizes will be awarded for the largest fish in various categories with purchase of registration ticket. All proceeds are used to enhance the recreational and fishing activities on Lake Noquebay.
For ladies who prefer indoor events, Marinette Chamber of Commerce is sponsoring a Women's Business Network Luncheon at noon on Tuesday, Feb. 26 at Riverside Golf Club with Melissa Ebsch, marketing and tourism director for the city and county of Marinette, as guest speaker. ON THE SOAP BOX
Pop-up ads on my cell phone and on my computer have been driving me crazy lately. The other day an ad promoting "drive electric" and "jet over the woods and through the hills" in an electric car popped up right in the middle of a Washington Post article praising a bi-partisan public lands package just passed by the Senate. The ad offers more information at "plugintothepresent.com".
That ad ties right in with the insane "New Green Deal" legislation promoted by far-left Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. Remember that she wants the government to end air travel and gas powered automobiles.
As always when this sort of coincidence comes up, need to wonder who has investments, who will benefit financially, if the ridiculous "New Green Deal" legislation promoted by far-left Rep. Ocasio-Cortez becomes law???
In addition to making air travel unnecessary, Ocasio-Cortez suggested that the Green New Deal may end vacations that require a jet, and suggested at a hearing that in the future your vacation will be up to a "vacation commissar" who will decide if trip is necessary.
Do you find that scary? I certainly do!
Incidentally, the bi-partisan public lands legislation was praised as "the most sweeping conservation legislation in a decade, protecting millions of acres of land and hundreds of miles of wild rivers across the country and establishing four new national monuments honoring heroes including Civil War soldiers and a civil rights icon."
Can agree with that, provided they give us permission to travel there and enjoy it!
To get a jump start on gardening, plan now to attend the Spring Gardening Conference at the Marinette Campus of UW Green Bay from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.on Saturday, March 30. The $40 charge includes a continental breakfast, morning refreshments, four educational sessions, and homemade lunch on campus.
Sessions include plant legend and lore, composting, outstanding spring shrubs, vegetable gardens, plant diseases, landscape design, mushroom growing, grafting, victory gardens and more. For an extra fee you can opt to attend workshops where you could build your own copper trellis, plant succulents in a Mason jar, learn to make herbal cordials (and then take them home to enjoy), or or make a flower pot rain chain. WALDORF ASTORIA STEW
This is an old, old recipe, from long before the days of slow cookers, maybe even before the days most homes had electricity. With some adjustments, by using tapioca as a thickening agent this could be made gluten free. assume the tapioca should be the granulated kind, not pearl tapioca. By the way, I learned from my Mom to use tapioca, not flour, to thicken fruit pies like cherry, apple and blueberry. By the way, this recipe came from sister-in-law Debbi, who passed it along by taking a photo of the yellowed old paper with her cell phone and then texting it to me. How's that for blending new technology with old ideas???
3 pounds stew meat, cubed (do not brown)
2 medium onions, cut up
2 cups celery, large chunks
6 to 8 medium potatoes, large chunks
You can use more of the vegetables if you like. Layer the ingredients in order listed in a large roasting pan that can be covered.
Season by sprinkling over:
3 tablespoons tapioca
1 tablespoon sugar
Salt and pepper
1 tablespoon sugar
Pour over all:
1 can condensed tomato soup
1 can condensed beef consume
1 can condensed onion sou (in beef stock)
Cover and bake in250 degree oven for 5 hours.
DO NOT REMOVE LID DURING THAT TIME!
It makes its own gravy. Serves 8 generously.
CHERRY ALMOND POKE CAKE
Cherry Almond Poke cake is incredibly easy and delicious! Isn't a cherry dessert they would have eaten in George Washington's day, but if they had it then they'd probably have loved it. It's made with a boxed cake mix, maraschino cherries, maraschino cherry juice, cream cheese, powdered sugar, whipped topping and sliced almonds, so how can you lose??
1 box white cake mix prepared as directed
Ingredients needed to make cake as package directs
1 cup maraschino cherry syrup
16 ounces cream cheese (2 blocks), softened
1/2 cup powdered sugar
1 teaspoon almond extract
2 tablespoons almond milk (use regular milk if you must)
8 ounce container frozen whipped topping
1/2 cup maraschino cherries, chopped
1/2 cup slivered almonds, chopped
Bake the cake according to package directions in a 9X13" pan and allow it to cool completely. When the cake is cool, poke holes all over the top using a meat fork or wooden skewer. Poke most of the holes clear to the bottom. Pour the maraschino cherry juice evenly over the cake, focusing on the holes. Allow the juice to be soaked up. (If you don't have quite a whole cup of cherry juice add some Grenadine syrup to make the full cup.) With an electric mixer beat the cream cheese, powdered sugar, almond extract and milk until it gets smooth and shiny. Spread over the top of the cake. Mix the whipped topping, chopped cherries, and half of the silvered almonds. Spread on top of the cream cheese mixture. Top with remaining almonds and refrigerate for at least an hour before serving. Decorate top with additional cherry pieces or halves if you like.
CHEESEHEAD STUFFED PEPPERS
These peppers can be beautifully prepared in a slow cooker, or in one of those new pressure cookers known as an "Instant Pot". Have had several requests for instant pot recipes, so will be watching for them. So far, I personally have not tried one, but guess I'll have to. Hear they are wonderful. Either way, once you get the peppers hollowed out and filled up, there isn't much left for you to except wait for it to cook, and then add the cheese cap shortly before it's time to eat. By the way, an Instant Pot isn't really instant, but it is pretty fast. Recipe serves five.
6 bell peppers
1 onion diced
1 tomato diced
1 pound extra lean ground beef, 90/10
1 cup white or brown rice, uncooked
1 egg beaten
2 teaspoons salt
1 teaspoon pepper
1 1/2 teaspoons Italian seasoning
1 teaspoon garlic powder
3 or 4 carrots, peeled and chunked
1 can tomato sauce, 15 ounces
2 cups shredded mozzarella or cheddar cheese
1/2 cup water
Dried parsley for garnish, optional
Slice tops off green peppers and hollow out the peppers. Dice one of the peppers and any usable parts on the caps you cut off. Mix diced peppers, onion and tomato with ground beef, egg, rice, salt, pepper, Italian seasoning, garlic powder, 1/4 cup of the tomato sauce and 1 cup of the shredded mozzarella cheese. Fill peppers evenly with meat mixture.
For Instant Pot: Pour 1/2 cup of the tomato sauce into the bottom of a 6 quart or larger Instant Pot and stir in 1/2 cup of water. Put trivet into the Instant Pot and place stuffed peppers and carrot chunks on top. Then take remaining tomato sauce left in the can and pour it on top of the stuffed peppers. Lock lid, making sure the nozzle is turned to "sealing" and cook on high pressure for 20 minutes. Do not start timing it until high pressure is reaches, which will take about 10 to 15 minutes. When the time is up, do a quick release of the pressure. Watch out for steam it shoots out fast and hot. Open lid and use the remaining cup of shredded cheese to put a "cap" on top of each pepper. Close lid for a couple of minutes to melt the cheese. Serve each pepper with some of the tomato "broth," some of the carrots, and a sprinkle of dried parsley.
For Slow Cooker: Spray inside of cooker with cooking spray. Pour in 1/2 cup water and 1/2 cup of the tomato sauce and stir. Place the peppers upright in the cooker and add the carrot chunks. Pour the remainder of the tomato sauce over everything, Put on cover and cook about 4 hours on high or 5or 6 hours on low. About half an hour before time to eat use the remaining cheese to put a cap on top of each pepper. Serve each pepper with some of the tomato "broth," some of the carrots, and a sprinkle of dried parsley.
TIP: A really good addition is to dice some bacon rather small and scatter it over the top of everything before you cook it.
Thought for the week: In these days of enforced "political correctness" there are many things we cannot say, and even more that we cannot put in print, and now even clothing we cannot wear to make a statement if the words offend certain segments of the population. We'd best beware. As our first President George Washington warned a couple of centuries ago, "If freedom of speech is taken away, then dumb and silent we may be led, like sheep to the slaughter." Please God, help this nation wake up before that happens.
