From Our Readers

Issue Date: May 2, 2019

Dear Editor:

I just read the article "To Hold Crivitz/Stephenson Zoning Meetings Every Fourth Thursday" in the April 25th, 2019 Edition of the Peshtigo Times.  Item Part 4: "Address potential uses that may depreciate affected land values, tax base, and have a negative effect on landowners' use and enjoyment of their property both in the village and in (the affected area of) the town" of the ETZ  caught my eye.

I am now encouraging the Village of Crivitz to consider extending the ETZ out to a 10 mile radius of the Village of Crivitz's borders instead of just a 1.5 mile radius.   I built my retirement home out on the peaceful corner of Schramm and Mickey Roads in 2013.  At that time ATVs were not allowed on the public roads.  Shortly after I built, the Town of Stephenson started to allow Schramm Road as an ATV Access Route with speed restrictions that needed to be followed.  In 2015 the Town of Stephenson made Schramm Road a permanent ATV route without notifying any of the permanent year around residents living on this road of this change.  Now between May 1st and October 31st of each year we permanent year around residents cannot use and enjoy our property due to the noise and garbage created by 3000 to 5000 ATVs traveling Schramm Road on any given weekend; of which many are exceeding the 35 mph speed limit, and of which many are running without mufflers.  No effort has ever been witnessed of the Town of Stephenson enforcing the speed limit on public roads for ATVs.

I was talking to my neighbor this past weekend and both of us were lamenting on the end of our "quiet" time for another 6 months.  Again I encourage the Village of Crivitz to consider extending the ETZ out to a 10 mile radius of the Village of Crivitz's borders instead of just a 1.5 mile radius.  Thank you for your consideration in this matter.

Sincerely,

Arthur F. Lautenbach,

Crivitz

Dear Editor:

Since Senator Tiffany, who was paid to be there, left hours before the hearing ended, this is the testimony I gave at 7:30 p.m. after waiting ten hours to speak for two minutes before the Joint Finance Committee April 24.

Wisconsin's investing billions in FoxConn, a foreign conglomerate. How does that help us? We need that kind of investment here, but instead our Forestry Mill Tax, the ONLY source of state revenue devoted to our needs, was eliminated. Why?

Our infrastructure is decaying: unsafe bridges, rotting culverts, pot-hole infested roads, yet we must pay BIG bucks to improve the highway system south of Milwaukee. Why?

We approve multiple referendums to keep our public schools operating. But private voucher schools? They're thriving, on our tax dollars. Why?

Rural hospitals and clinics are on life-support. Yet Republicans stubbornly refuse to accept Medicaid expansion funds. Why?

Legislation enables corporations to ravage our beautiful state: open-pit and sand-mining, CAFOs, unfettered development, unregulated pumping of groundwater. Invasive species choke our lakes; CWD threatens to decimate the deer herd. Gone are regulations that once protected us. Why?

In 2016 State Senate candidate Tiffany promised us state-of-the-art technology. Yet our internet service is sporadic at best, like TT's time-on-task when he was at the hearing. Why?

Instead of gambling billions on a shaky foreign company, why not invest some of that money here? Every thriving area of Wisconsin has something we don't: a publicly-funded educational institution. How about building a state-of-the-art research facility here to find a solution to CWD? That would attract a skilled workforce and private investment. It would be the economic engine that revitalizes the Northwoods. That's the answer, so here's the question: WHY NOT?
