Steve Stumbris Named As Wausaukee Village Trustee

Issue Date: May 22, 2019

At its meeting on Monday, May 20, Wausaukee Village Board unanimously approved appointment of Steve "Jet" Stumbris as a village trustee to fill the remainder of the term vacated by the April 22 resignation of Trustee Randy Schmidt. Schmidt, who previously served on the board, had just been returned to office in the April 2 elections after an absence of several years.

Stumbris, 68, is a lifelong Wausaukee resident and businessman. He was present for Monday's meeting and was to be sworn in by Clerk/Treasurer Sara Pullen on Tuesday, May 21.

Village President Hilbert Radtke said Schmidt's letter of resignation gave no reason for his decision. Board approval of the resignation was unanimous. Trustees present and voting were Darryll Schmidt, Kyle Stumbris, Mack McKim, JoAnn Polomis and Pat Tracy.

They approved appointing Stumbris to replace Schmidt on a number of committees, including Streets and Sanitation; Buildings, Parks and Grounds, and Water and Sewer Utility, and to assign McKim to fill Schmidt's spot on the Finance and Purchasing committee.

Discussions later in the meeting led to a decision to offer Randy Schmidt the position of Parade Marshall in this year's Independence Day Parade on Saturday, July 6. Those discussion included comments that in recent years there has been some difficulty getting people to accept that honor. There were also comments that Schmidt had served many years on the board in the past and deserves to be honored.

Radtke announced the village had received some very generous donations toward the cost of fireworks for the Independence Day celebration, and said any additional donations would be welcomed. So far the list of donors includes Marty Hogan of Hogan's towing, WPS,Wausaukee Lions club, Eagle Grinding, Greg and Amy Schroeder, Judy Engelman of the Ice Cream Station, Bear Point, and Wausaukee Lumber Company. Radtke noted the Town of Wausaukee also helps pay for the fireworks display.

He reminded everyone that the community wide rummage sale is coming up on Friday and Saturday, June 14 and 15. People wanting to get on the map for a $10 fee should call Ranger City Restaurant or Northwoods.

The meeting was scheduled to include consideration of a request from Ron Rost for the village to help Wausaukee Lions Club purchase an AED for the School District of Wausaukee, but the request was withdrawn. Pullen explained after the meeting that Wagner Fire Chief Tom Arthur had seen the meeting agenda and told Rost his department had purchased 10 AEDs and would donate one of them to the school and his offer was gladly accepted.

Radtke reminded residents that the April 1 deadline is past and they are required to have licenses for their dogs. He commented it is nice to see how everyone is cleaning up their properties, and reminded everyone that property owners are noted for the grass lawn area between street and sidewalk, and that permits are needed for building demolitions.

He commented it would be nice if some individuals or organizations would volunteer to help care for the village's decorative flower pots. Anyone willing to help is asked to contact Radtke or Pullen at the village hall.

School authorities had attended the board meeting in April and sent a thank you letter to the board for their support. Radtke praised the school for being on he right track in its partnership with NWTC to teach the trades as well as regular academic courses.

Polomis commented at high school graduation the previous day almost all students had taken at least one NWTC class.

The sole bid to repair municipal building roofs, from Rooftop Maintenance in the amount of $5,050 was accepted, as was the proposal from Dun Rite Seamless Gutters to repair rain gutters on the Municipal Building for $663.

The library lease of its present quarters from Ken Gocht was continued for one year, for $3,300, and probably will be extended for 2020 as well. There are hopes the library will eventually move into the former bank building that is to be revamped for community use.

The Fire Department's quarterly report was accepted. Tracy said anyone with questions should contact him and he will get back to the fire chief.

After brief discussion the board approved a one-time fee for Grace Lutheran Church to rent the pavilion at Steve Stumbris Sr. Memorial park for a youth Bible/soccer camp from July 22 through July 25, for a fee of $50. To a question from Polomis as to how that discount would affect other requests to use park facilities, Pullen explained most non-profits generally ask for discounts, "and usually, if they ask, we give it to them."

After concluding regular business the board went into closed executive session "to conduct employee performance review." After returning to open session Radtke announced they had taken no formal action, but had agreed to leave everything as it is for now and re-evaluate the decision in 30 days. "The plant is running well. What more could we ask for?" Radtke commented.
