Gerald (Jerry) Van Rens, 91, of Marinette, formerly of Green Bay, passed away Monday, May 20, 2019 with family by his side. Born Feb. 10, 1928 in Green Bay, to the late Frank and Mabel (DeKelver) Van Rens, he was baptized at St. Phillips Church in Green Bay. He served in the United States Navy starting in 1945 and was honorably discharged in 1947. He married Elaine Van Gheem on Jan. 6, 1951 at St. Boniface Church in DePere and worked at Georgia Pacific as a supervisor in the power plant, retiring at age 62. He was also a volunteer firefighter in the 1960's for Preble.
After retirement they lived on Anderson Lake for 16 years, then retired his fishing pole in 2017 and moved to Marinette. He enjoyed fishing, golfing, duck hunting, trap shooting, building dune buggies, restoring VW beetles and woodworking, making doll beds for every little girl he met that had an American Girl Doll. As a teenager he was a talented roller skater at Riverside Ballroom and St. Mary's Gym.
He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Elaine of Marinette; four children, Mike (Aggie) of Marinette, Tom (Debbie) of Green Bay, Jim (Patti) of Missouri and Jerilyn (Jim) of Montana; five grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; an aunt, Almira Bowers; a sister-in-law, Lauraine VanGheem and many nieces; nephews; other relatives and friends.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers, Doc, Mel and Skip.
Visitation will be held on Tuesday, May 28 at Holy Family Parish, Our Lady of Lourdes Church, 2715 Taylor Street, Marinette from 9 a.m. until time of funeral services at 11 a.m., with Rev. Celestine Byekwaso officiating. Interment will be in Nicolet Memorial Park Mausoleum. Hansen Onion Martell Funeral Home of Marinette is assisting the family with arrangements.
