Herbert "Herb" Handt, 88, of Niagara, passed away Monday, Sept. 2, 2019 at Dickinson County Memorial Hospital in Iron Mountain, Mi., with his daughter Sandy Peters by his side.
Born Jan. 17, 1931 in Watertown, the only son of the late Herbert and Betty Handt of Niagara, he graduated from Niagara High School and served in the United States Navy for a short time where he earned the nickname "Swabie." After service, he worked for many telephone companies, traveling all over the United States, where he met Edna McCoy in Virginia and they married in 1966.
The following year they had their only daughter, Sandra. They moved to Niagara in 1967 where he worked at the Niagara Telephone Company for over 25 years, retiring in 1996. He continued to live in Niagara for the remainder of his life. He enjoyed fishing and time with his family.
Survivors include his daughter, Sandy Peters (Rick Schadrie); two granddaughters and a great-granddaughter, all of Green Bay; two sisters, Nancy (Roger) Rocconi and Donna Bagozzi and Donna's daughter-in-law, Tina Bagozzi and her children, Alicia and Michael , Nancy's son and Herb's nephew, Jeff (Lori) Tanko, their daughter, Amy (Kevin) Venstra and their son, Dylan, all of Niagara, Wis. and Edna Boerner, Green Bay, Wis. and his former wife, whom he remained friends with.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother-in-law, Lou Bagozzi and a nephew, Steve Bagozzi.
Visitation will be held at Jacobs Funeral Home, Niagara Chapel on Saturday, Sept. 7 from 2 p.m. until time of the funeral services at 4 p.m. Pastor Doug Johnson will officiate with burial in Niagara Cemetery.
