Coleman Sweeps Lena C.C. Invitational

Issue Date: October 10, 2019

King/Woller Take Home Gold at Lena Invite

Coleman dominated the Lena Invitational on Tuesday, with both its boys' and girls' cross country teams taking first in the field.

For the Coleman boys, which defeated six other teams, Karson Casper took third of 55 runners with a time of 19 minutes, one second. Alex Rennie was fourth (19:28) and Noah Rennie was fifth (19:45).

John Nowak was 18th (21:28) and Sam King took 23rd (21:51).

Coleman's girls bested five other teams, led by race winner Faith King, who finished in 21 minutes, 53 seconds dominating the field by over a minute. Sara Seefeldt took sixth (24:16), Mariah Mursau was ninth (24:56), Megan Seefeldt was 11th (25:29), Ember DeWitt was 15th (25:59), Mariah Payette took 21st (26:18), Molly Seefeldt was 23rd (26:23), Lauryn Seefeldt was 36th (30:17), Stephanie Faudoa came in 37th (30:33) and Maddi Coutley took 48th (36:48).

"Overall, it was a great night for running, the weather was beautiful and I felt my athletes ran well," Cougars coach Becky Chaltry said. "It's been a rather difficult season with the wetness and some key meets being canceled. The kids have been pretty great about being flexible with the changes and they've pushed through some pretty crummy running conditions."

Oconto was third in the boys' standings behind Coleman and Laona/Wabeno. Josh Woller won the race by a 13 second margin with a time of 17 minutes, 57 seconds. He was the only runner under 18 minutes and one of only two runners under 19.

Lund/Smith Take Home Silver To Lead Bulldogs in Waupaca

The Peshtigo Bulldogs competed at the Waupaca Invitational on Thursday, finishing fourth of 10 teams on the boys' side of the standings. "The course had taken a fair amount of rain early in the week and was soft. The hills were muddy and slippery but still gave decent footing for the race. The course didn't give us the times we were hoping for but I am very proud of how all of the athletes competed," commented Peshtigo Head Coach Keith Nault on how the current rain has affected cross country courses statewide."

Winneconne, Seymour and Rhinelander were the only teams that finished ahead of the Bulldogs, who put up a good performance, led by Caleb Smith. "Caleb Smith  made a strong move at about the 600m mark from second to first and led through the first 1 3/4 miles. He came through the first mile, which is the most challenging portion  of the course, in 5:24. This was a little faster than we planned and he couldn't hold off the Winneconne  runner", said Nault.

Smith finished second of 66 runners with a time of 17 minutes, 37.7 seconds. Two of his teammates also finished under 18 minutes to crack the top five. Andrew Nelson was fourth (17:49.3) and Logan Smith placed fifth with a time of 17:55.1.

Cole Grabian was 52nd (21:07.8) and Matt Jornlin placed 54th (21:18.9)

The Peshtigo girls placed sixth of eight teams, with Sydney Lund leading the way with a second-place finish (21:14.3). "Sydney ran in second and third through most of the race. She was in third going into the final 300m to the finish. She made a strong final push to pass the Fox Valley Lutheran runner to finish in second place," said Nault.

Of 58 runners, Emily Halfman was 21st (22:48.1), Beverly Bloch took 33rd (24:02.0), Jessi Swiatnicki came in 42nd (25:03.3), Maria Powers finished 44th (25:20.1) and Salsabeel Salem was 55th (29:33.8).

Winneconne was the top girls' team, followed by Fox Valley Lutheran and Rhinelander. "Beverly Bloch and Logan Smith both ran personal records of 24:02 and 17:55 respectively. This is quit an accomplishment considering the conditions that they competed in," added Nault.

Maroons Boys/Girls Finish Third at the Barnyard Classic

The Menominee Maroons cross country team competed at the Barnyard Classic in Gladstone on Thursday, earning two bronze medal finishes as a team.

Both the Menominee boys and girls were third, with the boys' team competing against eight other teams and the girls, six.

The Maroons boys' top finisher was Hunter Shepeck, who took eighth of 67 runners (17:49.0). Next was Landen Clausen in 15th (18:08.0), followed by Nick Sandahl in 22nd (19:13.9), 24th-place Braeden Park (19:25.5) and Adam Sandahl in 25th (19:37.3). Evan Casey placed 31st (20:05.1) and Jason Bowers came in 45th (21:33.6).

Marquette won the boys' event and Gladstone was second.

For Menominee's girls, Hayden Buck (20:33.0) and Katie Anderla (20:49.9) were second and third, respectively, of 54 runners.

Jaida Lesperance took 17th (22:43.2), Attica Brandt was 25th (24:05.8) and Mikakah Mead came in 33rd (24:47.5).

Kingsford and Marquette were first and second of the girls' teams.

Tiger Boys Lead the Way With 2nd Place Finish at Athens Invite

Several Gillett Tigers returned from injury to compete at the Athens Invitational on Thursday, helping the Tigers to a pair of top-three team finishes.

The Gillett boys were second of 12 teams from northern Wisconsin, while the girls took third of 13 teams.

The Tiger boys were bested only by Tomahawk on the day. Derek Hanson took third of 121 runners to pace his teammates, finishing with a time of 17 minutes, 13.6 seconds. Alex Peterson was not far behind, taking sixth with a time of 17:19.7.

Evan Peterson came in 17th (18:25.7), Connor Hanson was 18th (18:26.4), Riley Engebretsen came in 35th (19:14.4) and Antonio Lizzaraga took 90th (22:50.3).

Junior Sylvia Hansen returned for the Gillett girls to take fifth of 82 runners (20:45.5). She was one of a handful of her teammates to miss a race last week due to minor injuries, but it appears the team is hitting the home stretch at full strength.

Ryann Wagner took eighth (20:47.3), Alaina Herzog was 23rd (22:23.1), Megan Wagner took 29th (22:31.3), Cheyenne Krueger placed 33rd (22:42.5), Kasey Hansen was 37th (22:50.4), Angela Mosconi took 41st (23:05.0), Laney DeBauch came in 50th (23:49.9) and Amber Brehmer took 64th (24:37.6).

Tomahawk and Auburndale took the top two spots in the girls' standings.

Panther Girls Finish Second at Reedsville Invitational

Oconto Falls' cross country teams competed at the Reedsville Panther Invite on Thursday.

Falls' girls were second of 10 teams behind only Valders. The Panthers had two finishers in the top five: Autumn Canavera took third with a time of 21 minutes, 42.94 seconds and Carleigh Kaczmarek was fifth (22:37.42).

Jaden Reed placed 31st of 69 runners (24:38.38), Autumn Magnin was 38th (25:08.97), Ericka Havemeier was 46th (25:45.51) and Alexis Euclide was 50th (26:12.77). Sydney Bell was 56th (26:58.94).

The Oconto Falls boys were ninth of 12 teams. The team's top runner was Joe Adams, who took 15th of 82 runners in the race (18:32.46). Brendan Konitzer was 30th (19:22.90), Isaac Raddatz took 36th (19:41.04), Braden Uelman was 48th (20:45.97), Tyler Budz came in 74th (23:25.37), Damian Murphy was 76th (23:43.40) and Landon Budz placed 82nd (25:54.18).

Valders, Brillion and Manitowoc Lutheran were the top three teams in the boys' race.
