Letter to Editor:

"Marinette/Menominee YMCA/USA Stingray Swim Team," "Swim-a-thon Fundraiser" is on Saturday, Nov. 9 at the Marinette High School pool from 10 a.m. " 3 p.m.  The pool is used by the Stingrays for practices, training and to host their district swim meets. Coach is Lenny Sipple.

The funds generated by the event will go towards the purchase of new "Timing Touchpads" located at the end of swim lanes during competition. Touch pads allow swimmers to stop the clock with their own hands as a sensor accurately detects that touch and records the exact time the swimmer completed the lap.

As a grandmother of two members of the Stingray Swim Team I want them, and their team members, to have every opportunity available to them to be the best swimmers they can be. To present as strong and well-practiced competitors when going against swim teams from much larger communities. To represent our communities with pride, positivity, along with principled and fair reputations when attending swim meets all over Upper Michigan and a large area of Wisconsin.

To accomplish that the Stingray swim team needs to upgrade outdated timing touchpad system which would allow them to host home swim meets at Marinette/Menominee YMCA with a sense of equality, pride and security in presenting with a dependable and functional aquatic timing touchpad system available to serve their needs.

Not only is our financial support important knowing how vital this system is to the teams function, the team deserves to know they are appreciated and supported by our communities.

Every day in the news we hear about today's youth exhibiting behaviors not conducive to society and certainly not paving the way to becoming an asset to themselves let alone to a community.  Perhaps the behavior derives from little to no positive guidance, or days filled with emptiness and silence, maybe felling unappreciated yet never seeing any avenues that lead to change any of that. Feeling alienated and alone they still have the desire to fit in, to have opportunities that allow for growth and building self-esteem, to feel included, or to feel a part of something positive. Perhaps to have one friend who does good things and has a wholesome support system could open doors to new experiences, learning and changing.  There seems to be no one or any place that offers those to our youth living on the fringe. If there were opportunities for youth to be part of programs like the "Swim Team" and experience the support and positivity that comes with being a part that, perhaps our communities would see less negative news about our youth.

Please stand behind the wholesome programs our communities have for our youth, programs families to take advantage as they strive to build good character in their children, where a wholesome environment exists within our community, a place of positivity, strong committed families, learning through fun and opportunities all lending to the building of persons of quality and character that builds great communities.  !

I am asking for your financial support to help these young athletes purchase new aquatic "Timing Touchpads" that are vital to the team's practices and competitions and the opportunity to be all that they can be while, " Making Waves In The Pool!"

This "Swim-a-thon" is an IN POOL fundraiser where the swimmers earn money by swimming lengths of the pool.

All members of the Stingray team will be seeking money pledges from family and friends for each lap they swim in a two hour period, but not to exceed 200 laps. (Ex: .25 X 200 laps = $50.00).

Or you can make a select amount donation in the swimmers name.

Or donate directly to the "YMCA Stingrays Team."

10 am " 12 noon = Bronze team members will swim in the 2 hour morning round!

1 pm " 3 p.m. = Silver and Gold team members will swim in the 2 hour afternoon round!

Word is out the Coach Lenny Sipple will join his swimmers taking to the pool as he goes for his 200 lap swim in support of his team. Time of the coach's swim to be announced! (As an added incentive Coach has agreed to "coloring his hair "Stingray" green at their first home meet!)

Swim team members would like to encourage businesses and friends throughout our communities to make a donation to show your support of these young athletes as they swim to make a positive difference for their team!

I would like to encourage the good people and businesses of Peshtigo, Marinette & Menominee to get behind these hard working athletes and their families; who like all parents of area youth regardless of which sport, they strive to maintain strong, moral and responsible values within their family structures, which in turn reflect a wholesome strong and positive community.

Your dedication and support for the "Stingrays Swim Team' provides the "jump start" to meeting the goals set as they strive to be the best swim team in not only competition, but as youth representatives of our communities.

We need your financial support, every dollar counts and your support is greatly appreciated! Please show your support by donating to our team.

Your donation is a 501(c)(3) tax exempt number and you will receive a Stingrays Swim Team sticker to show your support.

Donations should be mailed to: YMCA Stingrays Swim Team, 1600 West Drive, Menominee, MI 49585.

The public is invited to stop in during the "Stingrays Swim-A-Thon" where they will experience the energy, excitement and enthusiasm of the swimmers as they cheer them on to push to the last lap!

Bucket Raffles will be available so you can donate to the cause and still be a winner yourself!

The families of the swimmers will be hosting a bake sale along with bucket raffles during the "Swim a Thon" along with lots of music and fun guaranteed!

Editor:

Looking back while living in Peshtigo, I noticed that many names in the Peshtigo area have "ke" in their last names - Gaedke, Schmidke, Hipke, Lemke, Behnke, Wienke, Warnecke, Dumke, Luedke.

I think we should rename Peshtigo, Peske.

Al Ochs,

Marinette

Dear Editor:

The design team for CONNECT is well on its goal of having 100 plus community members in attendance for a conversation about the future of Peshtigo Schools and the community. That being said, we are in need of more representation in a few areas of our community. Our goal is to provide an opportunity for everyone to have a voice.

Where we need additional representation is from our non-parent/grandparent community members along with more residents from our Town of Grover and Town of Peshtigo areas. Your voice is important. Our graduates are your future neighbors, business owners, taxpayers, and/or employees. The more complete our story, the better decisions we can make as a school district that reflect the values and needs or our students, families, community, and employers.

You may be asking yourself why it is important for me to attend; I do not have kids in school.

First and foremost, great schools provide the foundation of great communities. To keep a community thriving our employers, churches, towns, etc., need people to work, live, and spend money in their community. No one entity can attract new families, retain current families, and/or make Peshtigo attractive to our high school graduates. It is something we must do together and CONNECT is a chance to do so.

To learn more please contact me at 715-582-3677. You can register at www.peshtigo.k12.wi.us or by calling 715-582-3677, ext. 1030.

Your Partner in Education,

Patrick Rau,

Superintendent
