Carriveau/Mayhew Make First State Pool Appearance
Issue Date: November 21, 2019
Before even jumping into the pool Friday at the WIAA Division II State Swim & Dive Championships, Maija Carriveau and Allie Mayhew had already made history.
The pair, both Peshtigo High School juniors, were the first Peshtigo swimmers to qualify for state, held at UW-Madison.
Swimming for the Marinette-Peshtigo swim team, Carriveau swam in the 50-yard freestyle, the fifth event of the night. Competing in the second heat, she finished seventh of 16 swimmers with a time of 24.94 seconds, one spot better than she was seeded.
After two breaks, Mayhew competed in the 100-yard backstroke, the 10th event of the night. She finished 16th with a time of 1 minute, 3.4 seconds.
Marinette-Peshtigo was 30th as a team. Edgewood dominated to win the Division II crown.
Marinette-Peshtigo coach Calista Thill said she felt the day went well, noting the girls' positive attitude throughout.
"It's a great place to be. I think it's great that they were the first two to come and to make history for Peshtigo," Thill said. "They're super excited about it. That's all they were really talking about, so it's awesome. It's a great accomplishment and they worked hard all season for it."
And after the full experience down in Madison, is it safe to say the pair is already looking forward to next year?
"Oh yeah, for sure," Thill said. "They know what they need to look forward to for next year and what they can learn from this meet and take home."
