Issue Date: February 13, 2020
Evan Suennen, grade 7, son of Jennifer and Travis Suennen, was the 2020 Wausaukee School District Geography Bee champion. The event, held at the school in January was open to all fourth through eighth graders.
Ainsley Russ grade 5 was runner-up, and Braden Barker grade 6 received the third place trophy. The seven other finalists were: grade 4-Natalie Kusba, Jade Maxwell; grade 5-Lexie Goldschmidt; grade 6-Matthew Mueller; grade 7-Madison Fronsee; grade 8-Morgan Bales, Blake Seehawer. The Bee required students to answer questions posed by Katey Ambrose, 4k-8th grade principal, on all aspects of geography.
Judges were Beth Meyers 6th grade teacher, and Carrie Truby, 7th grade teacher. Contest questions were provided by the National Geographic Society, a sponsor of the event. The School Bee organized by Donna Pintarelli 5th grade teacher, and the 5th grade class, was the first round in the annual National Geography Bee competition.
The school winner took a written test, as do all the winners in thousands of schools across the United States, District of Columbia, and U.S. territories, as part of the next round of competition. Up to 100 of the top scorers in each state and territory will be eligible to compete in the State Bees in early spring.
