Wausaukee Loses Heart Breaker To Laona/Wabeno
Issue Date: March 18, 2020
The Wausaukee Rangers, who were the last of the area M&O teams to remain on the WIAA tournament trail, fell in a super close call for the Rebels of Laona/Wabeno as the Rangers fell by one point 68-67.
The heart breaker of a loss was one of the last games played before the WIAA called off all competition due to the spread of the coronavirus.
Thursday night on neutral ground in Elcho, Wausaukee had other concerns, that being a sectional win, but a tough Rebel crew was ready to fight off the Rangers and win the last minute victory.
Wausaukee by all means should have been able to coast their way to the win over the first half as Hayden Renikow blasted the hoop from long range, striking for a quadruple helping of threes. Tristen Pollard was also johnny on the spot from downtown, hitting three triples. The burst of scoring by the Rangers propelled them to the 42-31 halftime lead.
But a superlative effort by the Rebel defense and some great shooting from Mike Stamper closed that gap for the Rebels giving them the 68-67 lead by games end. The second half scoring saw the Rebels outdo the Rangers 37-25.
Hayden Renikow had a whale of a game for the Rangers, firing in 29 points to lead all scorers. His night was highlighted by six triples. Pollard added up 14 points while Brenden Versaskas finished the game with eight.
The Rebels were led by Stamper with 21 points. Connor Taylor with 15 points and Jesse Pakulski with 10 points.
The Peshtigo Times was unable to get photos of the event due to not being allowed into the event. This was due to restrictions on attendance set by the WIAA to reduce the spread of the corona virus.
