From our readersIssue Date: April 1, 2020 Dear Editor:
Please consider this response to Allen Brey's recent letter to the editor regarding my candidacy for the Marinette County Circuit Court position.
My family, friends, and clients are best qualified to attest to my work ethic, my character and integrity. If I get elected, the judicial role will not change who I am as a person. I will use my work and life experiences in the judicial position to serve the citizens of Marinette County.
For people who do not know the true Allen Brey, google him on the internet, type in the words, "In Matter of Disciplinary Proceeding Against Brey" or 蕻 Wis. 2d 65". As humans, we make mistakes in our life. Most of us learn from our mistakes. Unfortunately, the Allen Brey I know, did not learn from his mistakes but was empowered in his former position as District Attorney.
My pledge to implement a Marinette County Veterans Treatment Court is not a hollow promise, it is a commitment. This program will benefit Veterans who may have alcohol or drug related issues or suffer from Depression or Post Traumatic Stress Disorders as a result of their service to our Country. For some Veterans these issues result in conduct that brings them into our criminal justice system. This alternative sentencing program will be for non-violent offenders who do not pose a serious threat to our community or their family. If any Veteran is suffering as a result of their service to our Country and is sentenced to jail or prison when we could utilize an appropriate alternative sentencing program, that is one Veteran too many.
Mike Perry,
Candidate for Marinette County
Circuit Court Judge on April 7th
Dear Editor:
I'm writing to express my concern over a letter received from BPM Inc. General Manager James Koronkiewicz. This letter is informing the City of Peshtigo that Arath XXXIII (BPM Inc parent company) is denying easement access to BPM property in order to perform work on sewer lines. The letter goes on to state that several factors need to be considered/addressed before any type of agreement may be accepted.
In this letter, Mr. Koronkiewicz refers to a letter dated 12/11/2018 requesting a rate reduction in sewer rates. This request was given to the Water & Sewer Committee to look into and bring back to Council their findings and recommendations, in which they did. On April 16, 2019 at the City Council meeting, Tom Gryzwa, Chairman of the Water & Sewer Committee gave a brief history and summary their 4 month activity on the request from the time it was given on 12/11/2018. They also brought in Taryn Nall of Rucker's & Miele Inc., who presented the analytical data, methodology for the distribution of cost factors, expenses, user charges for sewer customers and the user charge schedule. He compiled scenarios for the impact on city customers and could not recommend the rate reduction for BPM due to not meeting with the City's Clean Water Act Fund Loan requirements. Gryzwa then stated that no new rates are being proposed at this time.
Jim Koronkiewicz then addressed the Council regarding BPM Inc's portion of the City loans in the proposed rates. Mr. Koronkiewicz stated clarification of the DNR document and requirement that there is room in certain areas to allow the rate change to happen so not to be illegal and that needed to be reviewed. After some discussion the Council voted 4-2 to deny the rate reduction request.
Since I was one of the dissenting votes I asked Mr. Koronkiewicz if he could bring in any data or information that would substantiate the reduction before our next meeting, I was thinking about a possible reconsideration. He reluctantly said he would get what he could but there was a lot he couldn't or wouldn't divulge. To my knowledge no information that BPM had was given to the City. At the time I was truly hoping as was the Mayor my request would have eased up tension a bit. Maybe it wasn't taken in that context.
So now as time has passed and several requests by the Water & Sewer Committee and the Mayor to meet or negotiate have been denied still another letter is once again being posted bashing, threatening and basically holding the City administration responsible and hostage from performing a critical sewer project that will affect the west side of the City out of spite. We want to work with BPM but do they want to work with us?
Thank You,
Michael Behnke,
Alderman
City of Peshtigo
Letter to Editor:
I have some thoughts about how we're handling the coronavirus. I've tracked the numbers of cases both statewide and nationally. As the numbers increase, the ratio of death cases has held steady at 1.3%. Yet businesses have been shut down, millions of people have been put out of work, we are supposed to stay home and our lives have been disrupted, This is a huge overreach. Americans will not take this lying down. They will do as they have for 250 years and use ballots instead of bullets to throw the rascals out. My name is Dave Johnson and I approve this message.

Editor:
To City of Marinette Voters:
In a March 25, 2020 letter to the editor concerning the Marinette Municipal Judge election, the writer appeared to question the integrity of my write-in candidacy for this position. He speculated that I perhaps want to hide my financial interests from public scrutiny. I have no income areas to hide " I'm too generous with my children and grandchildren and my wife spends the rest. He wondered if my dog ate the application papers " I have no dog. The answer to his implications is that I made a mistake which I have owned. I was unaware of a deadline by which to file the Statement of Economic Interests and consequently missed it. However, I have since filed it with the Ethics Commission in Madison, so it is on record. It's that simple, and fortunately, Wisconsin election laws allow write-in candidates.
After much reflection, I decided to pursue this option, partly because I believe Marinette voters should have a choice, and their choice will be respected in the election. Furthermore, I am motivated by a desire to serve the community. I believe I have the attitude, temperament, and ability to continue the Municipal Court's tradition of fairness, impartiality, and integrity.
Sincerely,
John LaCourt,
Marinette
To the Editor:
"Troubled Times"
Gray skies all around
People living in panic and fear
No sun up in the sky
Sadness in every tear.
Crows are cawing in the fields
Waiting for the summer sun
Please bring us back the warmth
We're all confused and on the run.
Soon the fawns will be born
But life is full of doubts and rhymes
We need you more than ever now
To help us through these troubled times.
Roger Lanich,
Wausaukee
Poetry from the Pen of Joyce Bedora
HAVE YOU?
Have you walked a few steps with Jesus,
Down the Calvary road?
Have you stooped to lighten His burden,
To lighten His heavy load?
Have you gone to the Garden with Jesus,
To patiently watch and pray?
Or were you just too busy,
You'll do it some other day?
Have you gone to the courtyard with Peter,
As he denies Christ thrice?
Have you felt a little guilty,
For the times that you denied Christ?
Have you followed the crowd to the Judgment Hall,
Where Jesus innocently stands?
Have you cried, "Don't crucify Jesus,"
Or joined the others throughout the land?
Have you followed the Roman soldiers,
To the Common Hall?
Then watched them dress Jesus as a king,
So they could have a ball?
Have you seen them bow before Jesus,
As they mockingly smote Him on the head?
Were you on the side of Jesus,
Or the Roman soldiers instead?
Have you stopped, as the Roman soldiers,
Nailed Jesus to the Cross?
Have you thought of this as a celebration,
Or as the world's greatest loss?
Have you stopped to listen to Jesus,
As He looked up to Heaven and cried,
"My Father, why have You forsakes me?"
Just before He died.
Have you asked, "Why did Christ suffer,
and die upon that tree?"
It was God's plan for our salvation,
Now, we all can clearly see.
God sent His perfect, guiltless Son,
To die for you and me.
To give us all salvation, and life eternally.
So have you asked THIS JESUS
To cleanse your heart from sin?
Have you invited Him to dwell,
Eternally within?
Have you?
Please do.
NAIL PRINTS
A little girl still troubled
By her Sunday School teacher's death,
Awoke to tell her mother
Of a dream she'll never forget.
She dreamed she went to Heaven
And met her Sunday School teacher there,
Who introduced her to David and Paul
Any many other Bible saints there.
But her mom in disappointment asked,
Didn't she introduce you to Jesus too?
Oh, no, said the child, her face aglow,
That's one introduction she didn't do.
For I knew Him the moment I saw Him
I saw the nail prints in His hands.
Then I knew that this was Heaven,
His wonderful promised land.
"JESUS SAID"
"Repent"... "Believe"... and "Follow Me".
That's why I died
On Calvary's Tree.
Then read My Bible
and pray each day
Be obedient to it,
and trust and obey.
For Salvation is Free,
There's no other way.
For "I am the Life,
the Truth, the Way".
To come to the Father
You must come through Me.
That's why I died
On Calvary's Tree.
Then because I arose
You too shall arise,
To live eternally,
With Me in the skies.
