From our readersIssue Date: May 20, 2020 Dear Editor
Memorial Day, a day created to honor those who had fallen protecting our precious freedoms. Why is it important to have a special day to remember them? Shouldn't always we have them in mind, as their families and those who served with them surely do?
The day we know as Memorial Day origins can be traced back to the end of the Civil War, setting May 30th aside for speeches, ceremonies and to decorate the grave of those who died in that war. In 1971 the final Monday in May was established as a federal holiday, a day set aside to honor those who had given their lives for our freedom. Army Sergeant Major Bill Paxton once said, "May we never forget our fallen comrades. Freedom isn't free."
In 2020, it is sad to say, that we will not be celebrating Memorial Day with speeches and ceremonies recognizing our heroes, we will be hunkered down in our homes fighting an unseen disease carried about by unknowing peoples. Because of this disease, we have given up many of those precious freedoms service members from many generations past have died to protect. We pray that one day, soon, this enemy too will be defeated, and we can return to our normal lives.
Take a moment on Monday, May 25 to stop and remember our fallen heroes lying in graves across the world. Remember that they took up the cause of freedom and gave the ultimate sacrifice, their lives, so the freedoms we so cherish in this land may continue on to generations to come. Remember the mothers, fathers, wives, husbands, and children who grew up without their loved one who fell on that battlefield fighting protecting us.
Why do we honor them? Why do we place flags on their graves on Memorial Day? Why do we remember them? The answer to all three question is the same; we remember them to remind ourselves that freedom isn't free.

Citizens have asked me where I stand regarding the enforcement of Governor Whitmer's Executive Orders, after the Michigan Legislature did not vote to extend the state of emergency beyond April 30th as required by law. On May 15, 2020, the Court of Claims heard arguments on the lawsuit the legislature filed against the Governor. This lawsuit will determine the scope of Governor's authority to issue Executive Orders under the Emergency Management and Emergency Powers Acts.
My deputies and I will serve and protect you and we will respond to your complaints using discretion and compassion. Each complaint will be investigated and my deputies and I will provide guidance and assistance in finding solutions to help you overcome your hardships. The Sheriff s Office will not enforce Governor Whitmer's Executive Orders with arrests and citations, which would bring more hardship to small businesses, churches and the citizens of Menominee County. As your Sheriff, I am a constitutional peace officer and I will protect your civil liberties and constitutional rights, within my authority.
Thank you for your voluntary compliance during this difficult crisis. Your sacrifices are noteworthy and you have been doing a great job social distancing and protecting your families. Please stay safe, peaceful and considerate to others as the courts decide on the future of the Executive Orders.
Sincerely,
Sheriff Kenny Marks
Dear Editor:
The Menominee American Legion Auxiliary (ALA) Unit 146 would like to take this time to reflect with the community that on Memorial Day, and throughout the year, to remember those veterans who fought, and courageously gave of their lives while serving in America's Armed Forces.
Since Memorial Day was originally known as Decoration Day from the American Civil War era to honor Union soldier casualties, it was not until after World War I, however, that it was extended to include all men and women who died in any war, or military action. The current name for this day did not come into use until after World War II, and Memorial Day is now a federal holiday, and observed the last Monday in May.
The American Legion Auxiliary is the world's largest premier patriotic service organization, and has been advocating for our veterans, and military since 1919 " 101 years. The ALA members exemplify "Service, Not Self" through countless volunteer hours, programs, conferences, and with an increased presence in Washington, D. C. with the American Legion Family to give a voice for 3 million veterans, military, and their families.
The American Legion Auxiliary promotes Americanism, and encourages love of country, and to display pride, and respect toward the United States of America and its flag. Also, we encourage patriotism, and support of the Constitution of the United States, the military, and to enjoy the freedom we live in from the sacrifices of our veterans.
In addition, the Menominee American Legion Auxiliary Unit 146 would like to express gratitude, and sadness as we reflect on the 2020 COVID-19 Pandemic that has resulted in approximately 89,000 deaths Nationwide, and 300,000 Globally. Worldwide, the loss of lives in business, government, medical health sectors, emergency operations, police, fire, civil, and military personnel, has taken a devastating toll.
Remember to say, "Thank You", to all who give of themselves with compassion to protect our health, and safety in this great country, the "United States of America".
Connie Kewley,
Public Relations chairman,
Menominee ALA Unit 146,
Menominee, MI
