Athelstane/Silver Cliff Unit 66 to Meet Sept. 12

Issue Date: August 12, 2020

The American Legion Auxiliary Unit 66 met on Aug. 1 at the Silver Cliff Picnic Area. American Legion Post/Unit 66 members began the meeting together to discuss the Sept. 26th Chili Fest. It was decided to cancel the event this year to help prevent the spread of the COVID virus. All other activities associated with Chili Fest were cancelled as well. They also discussed different options for the 2020 Christmas Dinner. This will be addressed further at the Sept. 12 meeting.

In Unit 66 business, member Ann Wender is looking for a different supplier to purchase the "Christmas-In-July" neck pillows they present to veterans at the Iron Mountain facility. The former vendor is no longer in business. They are not able to present the pillows in person at this time, but will have them shipped directly to the facility for their staff to distribute. In other business, it was decided to address the 2021 budget in January 2021.

President Dee Farley presented several awards Athelstane/Silver Cliff Unit 66 received from the American Legion Auxiliary Department headquarters. They received the "Anchored In Service Award" for Outstanding Service to Veterans. That award is for volunteer service hours reported last spring. Individual Member Awards were presented to Mary Deprey, Dee Farey, Kathleen Grassell, Denise Jackett, Priscilla Maeder, Jan Meyer, Cassie Meyers, Barb Van Boxtel, Ann Wender, and Carrie Willems. Special recognition went to Unit 66 members Ann Wender with 1350 volunteer hours and Cassie Meyers with 1100 volunteer hours.

The 2021 membership year is now starting and $32 annual dues can be paid at any time. Send a check to membership Chairman, Carrie Willems or pay at any meeting.

Continue to collect hotel toiletries and other items for the homeless. This is an ongoing collection and any community member can collect as well. Contact Dee Farley or Shorty Zindars for details.

The next scheduled meeting will be at 10AM on Saturday, Sept. 12 at the Silver Cliff Picnic Area.
