Editor:

Can this nation survive as a united people united in a brotherhood of humanity?

I believe we are at a cross roads. We have had almost four years of leadership focused on blind loyalty to Trump, the enrichment of the wealthy at the cost of the less well off, stoking the divisions of race, ethnicity, and residency, and the propaganda of fear. This was the country of 1863 in my mind. This what Trump Republicans seem to be supporting outwardly or in their silence through conformity. For example, where were they when children were put in overcrowded cages, racist seem ok, Democratic areas are seen to be expendable to disease, and Democrats are accused of wanting to destroy the nation.

How can this be the future goals imbodied in the hopes and purpose of the founding of this nation? How is this the expression of the Christian ideals of love your neighbor and value each individual? How does this prevent the constant danger of governments drifting toward authoritarian leaders and large-scale corruption? How does this promote safety and tolerance in the nation? In this election, where is the John McCain moments of decency?

I believe Joe Biden's message is the most inclusive and is focused on mending a nation being torn apart.

Dear Editor,

My head is spinning. Too much bad news. Often I take refuge in a fantasy video game. So there we were, a Boise buddy and I, fighting for our avatars' lives against a slew of demons when my husband called up the stairs, "Ruth Bader Ginsburg died". I was gobsmacked, overwhelmed with sadness. The Notorious RBG gone on September 18th. John Lewis gone on July 18th. Two of my heroes gone on the same day two months apart. And now the U.S. coronavirus death toll has surpassed 200,000 and continues to rise.

But that Friday we fought on until we'd successfully defeated the demons and returned to a safe space called the Chamber of Heart; then I went downstairs to be with my husband. That's what we have to do: keep on fighting with our loved ones and allies against the foul forces in the Trump administration until we return to a democracy of heart. We must fight for a return to love rather than hate, for unity rather than division, for care and service rather than power and money, for science and facts rather than willful denial and ignorance, and for rule of law rather than rule of power achieved through lies, conspiracies, and propaganda.

"The greatest menace to freedom is an inert people; that public discussion is a political duty; and that this should be a fundamental principle of the American government." -Ruth Bader Ginsburg in her book My Own Words (2012).

Vote! Honor the memory of Ruth Bader Ginsberg and John Lewis by voting. Vote for democracy. Talk with your neighbors about why and how you're voting. Fight on against a corrupt, incompetent administration and its enablers who are in power for themselves, not for us. Fight for democracy as if you life and freedom depended on it - because they do.

To the Editor,

"The Last Summer Days"

These are the last summer days

Where the dew lies heavy on the ground,

And it doesn't burn off until the afternoon

When the meadowlarks sing their song.

Some say the cool gray mornings are a sign

That winter isn't far away,

But I tend to look at things more poetic

That it's another chapter of my life from yesterday.

I saw the white swans fly today

And wondered if they too can see,

The meanings of all these changes

That are happening to the seasons and me.

Sometimes it's hard to admit

That I'm in the last quarter of my summer days,

But as long as I can watch the white swans fly

Does it matter anyway?
